Earning a Living as an Artist - Doable?

One weekend this fall I was in Fort Wayne, IN, to judge a new and cool art show. My sister was invited to her friend's home for a barbecue and I was included. We drove out of town FOREVER it felt like and all the way I'm thinking, never would I live here in the middle of nowhere. Except ... we got there and it was wonderful. I know a lot of artists live in out of the way places (they're affordable after all), so here are a few shots of Kim and Steve Rorick's home and studio.

I've known Kim a long time and watched her progress from first pots to a fine professional. She apologizes for the studio looking so clean (company is coming and none of the tables are in the shop because they are holding up a very fine barbecue dinner in the garage.) See images of her work here.

Kim is a part of a large network of artists who live in the Ft. Wayne area. They jointly hold studio tours, support and show their work at a co-op gallery, The Orchard Gallery, and start art fairs to help one another live the creative life.

  • I remember when you quit, Carrie. It was a big leap of faith and now what adventures you have had. Ridiculously cheap really works, doesn't it? I couldn't find someone to give my old house away to.

  • Connie,

No I have not met your friend, Bill, but I could eventually run into him somewhere.  I moved here in 2010, my husband, one year earlier.

I have to agree with Christina about more excitement in a higher populated area, although the outdoors/ nature/ peace is definitely not lost on me. Like those deer, Richard, we have some bold ones here, too.

  • That is a cool house-and cat- that you have, Connie!

We moved from the center of coastal Connecticut to the Eastern Shore of Virginia a few years ago, when I quit my job to paint. This salt marsh is at the end of our street, and the Atlantic is just beyond the barrier islands. It's quiet here, the air is clean, the light is amazing, and it's ridiculously cheap to live here. I'm never going back!

  • Hey Judy, my great friend Bill Coleman lived in State College and haunted the valleys in the area with his camera taking photos of the Amish. Did you ever run across Bill? Nice place you have there.

Have to say I wouldn't want to shovel the snow in any of these places. Although, I'd guess that is not a problem for Greg.

I just "misplaced" my cellphone, which had pictures of our workshop/darkroom, and which means I can't take a shot and upload either. I have shots of friends studios also but they are actual photos, not ready to scan and upload.

That is a cool shot in Arkansas, Barrie. Did you sell photos at shows?

  • 301669454?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024My house and studio.

  • Great shot of your lovely home and helpful kitty, Connie.  I have to say that although I don't miss living in a small town, my husband, who owns a motorcycle, misses being able to quickly get on an open country road to ride...I love the energy and the opportunities of a big city, not to mention the cultural and fine dining options...couldn't go back.

  • How about this studio? Located in Altheimer, Arkansas, I used to photograph throughout the state and was overjoyed to find Frank Wilson and Brother Wesley Russell.

  • Judy, sounds lovely -- upload a photo by clicking on the little picture frame in the toolbar above the comment box. You can do it. Show us your place.

  • Dumb one here- how can I attach a photo?

I lived in Akron/Cleveland OH for almost 25 years, and the past 6 years outside of State College, PA, in an 1860 farmhouse with a few acres, with over 100 acres of wooded mountain behind me and nothing in front. Just a lot of wildlife!
