Large format printers...what do YOU use?

I have been looking at getting a large format printer (Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100 Large Format Printer) and I am seeking input from any experts out there who might like to chime in. I would be using this to print up my own work for sale.

I welcome any input anyone is willing to give. I know a little bit about printers, so don't be afraid to throw in technical jargon if the situation calls for it. : )

Thanks in advance

  • Michael you didn't mention what types of prints you are planning to do.  Just B&W, mix of sizes, planning to do any canvas?  If you are planning to do canvas a 24" printer usually is to small as you lose 3-4" on overall width to do the wrap around 1 1/2 inch gallery bars.  Gather as much information about the combination of printers, types of print material, ICC profiles available etc before making a decision.  You are planning to have some way of profiling your monitor?  I use the Colormunki from xRite and it does a solid job on my monitors (I don't profile my papers as I use the Colorbyte Imageprint RIP and they supply great profiles for just about any paper out there.  Only usable on Epsons however.)

This is a good time of year to buy a printer as generally there are rebates and show specials.  PhotoPro Expo in New York at the end of October is a good buying opportunity.

Check out the forums on Yahoo as Jim suggested.  Also www.luminous-landscape.com has a forum on printers that is a wealth of information.  Also John Paul Caponigro (www.johnpaulcaponigro.com/) has a good site with information.

  • Digital Black & White forum also has some interesting folks. And info and converting to dedicated black ink systems.
  • Thank you very much for the input. I will be doing mostly b/w - I will check out Yahoo.

  • I have used Epson printers for the past eight years, and have been pleased with them overall. I currently have a 4800, which handles cut sheet and rolls up to 17" wide; a 7800 for rolls to 24" wide and and a 9890 for 44". I started with a small Epson 2200 which swallowed ink at a prodigious rate.
What type of work do you anticipate printing? There are some well-visited large format forums on Yahoo Groups that may be able to steer you in the right direction. Epson Large Format is one; I suspect there is one for Canon as well. My experience with Canon is limited to smaller MF printers and the drivers are not written as well for Macs, IMHO. If you are running in a Mac environment, that might be a point for further investigation.
  • If there are any artists in the Los Angeles area, I'd be willing to go in on a large format printer.

  • I just bought an Epson 7890. I had an Epson 3800 that I was very happy with and everything I read has been positive of the 7890.
