  • It often takes years for events, any event, to gain traction with the public. With the festival, compared with the A&C Show, people show up in droves to eat drink and be merry. Part of this is community supporting their community, part tradition. You can be great at getting the event set up and juried and collecting fees..... And then totally fail at getting people through the gate

Perhaps the Daughters of Penelope need to have their take from the event tied to attendance.

Again, though, as artists and artisans, we can always vote with our feet as a form of direct feedback. Promoters pay little notice sometimes to repeat exhibitors. I have asked several 2nd Annual event promoters how they are going to get more folks through the gate for year 2. Most times, I never get a reply. Most likely because they are lacking a clue and do not wish to appear ineffective or lacking promotional genius
  • I was so optimistic about this one, considering they do that huge Greek Fest and it was a crafter running it.

But just like Ramona said, it was a parking lot full of beautiful crafts and nobody shopping except us.  I could count on one hand the # of people who walked through.  There was an activity going on inside the church in the morning, but almost none of them walked through afterward.  Not even the church members were coming out to support it.

I was also disappointed that the organizer didn't reach out to us afterward with a post-mortem - what they did to draw customers, what they think went wrong, what they'll try next year, maybe offer us a discount to come back and try again.  I understand a 1st year show will be slow, but something went seriously wrong here.  I'd be embarrassed if I were the organizer, but I'd at least put it out there so that people understood that we were trying to build a good show - not just collect fees.

  • Disappointing. And, I believe they are back on the JAS site advertising for their 2nd Annual event. Hopefully the person who got them set up for JAS also will be running the media campaign.
  • 2013 was their first year. I was there as an exhibitor ( I am a 2D artist) It was set up on their parking lot. There was a good selection of fine art and fine crafters , no "church lady" stuff.  By 2pm it was obvious that no one but us artists were going to attend ,and I mean NOBODY. By 3 the guy in charge was telling us  it was OK to just go home. It sure felt like it was a case of someone collected space fees and thinking that was all there was to it. We didn't even get a free cup of coffee in the morning for our troubles. I certainly wouldn't go back there.

  • Thanks for the info Kathleen!  I didn't know it was the first year, explains why I had trouble finding out about it.  I will check out the website.

  • I saw this on zapplication & contacted them to investigate because that church is well-known locally for a huge Greek Fest.  Funny enough it turns out that I know the organizers - crafters I met at Collingswood Fine Art years ago.

The show has a site www.artsfestivalstgeorge.org with contact info, besides the listing on zapplication.  It's on the church grounds (on pavement), and it's their 1st year.  They confirmed that there will be no retail, only juried crafts, plus the church will be doing food.  I have high hopes for quality because the organizers are experienced crafters and the committee working on it is full of people with years of experience doing the Greek Fest.  And since it's inexpensive & close to me, I decided to give it a try.

I do functional glass bottle art & also wire wrap jewelry.  The organizer is a potter - nice work.  I forwarded it to other crafters in my network but don't yet know who's applying.

  • For now I have decided to just go as a patron & check it out.  It is not expensive to do and it is only one day, but I don't want to schedule it and find out it's a bunch of church ladies selling hand sewn items.  I will post on this blog after I check it out.

  • I've been kicking around the idea of doing this show too... Wonder what it's all about There's also a wordpress site

  • Diane, I too haven't heard anything about this show and I reside in the next county. I tried contacting them through zapplication, but it wasn't allowing me. I was wondering how many years they have been doing the show and if it is held along State Street or on the church grounds?
