Glynn Art in the Park EXTRAvARTganza on St. Simons Island, GA offers a quality arts and crafts event in a small-town oceanside setting. The Glynn Art Association is the organizer for this 21st annual spring event. The island is one of four barrier islands known as the “Golden Isles” on the Georgia coast, midway between Savannah, GA, and Jacksonville, FL, including Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island.

8869131255?profile=originalThe festival occurs during the time of year when many visitors are in town to enjoy a spring break vacation, coming from throughout the state, as well as from around the country. The jury brings in a well-balanced selection of about 70 artists representing 2D and 3D media.

Postell Park, home to the festival across the street from Glynn Art Visual Center, was re-designed a few years ago and laid out specifically for events like this. The one square block setting is located under mighty live oak trees, with the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred yards away, creating a unique ambiance.

A Children’s Art table enables the creation of a take-home piece of art, suitable for all young ages. A few food vendors will be on site in addition to multiple restaurants in the nearby Pier Village, within a short walking distance. This years festival also coincides with the Georgia Coastal Artists’ spring show and sale, making for an even more exciting EXTRAvARTganza!

Advertising is done through local newspapers and tourism guides, billboards and signs throughout the community, posters in storefronts, Constant Contact emails, our website, and social media.

Surveys from previous festivals consistently praise our staff and volunteers for their hospitality.

One artist recently wrote: “The Art Association does everything right and I love this show.” A local residentwrote to us: “I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the festival this past weekend. I went to the festival on Saturday 'just to look,' the art was very impressive and I ended up buying several things.“

  • Thanks Connie! The review I found was for their fall show - but still a great help.

  • Renee, there was a review and a discussion on this show last year. Put "Glynn" in the search and I' think you'll find that info.

  • Sorry about getting off topic with my previous replies. Now going back to the Glynn Art in the Park show, I plan to submit an application for the fall show and also do St Marys again. I did the fall show in St. Marys in 2012 and although we rained out after just 3 hours I sold enough to cover all expenses. it was an easy setup and breakdown other then the rain and it's a nice little community, very quaint and historic.

  • Hi Bill, thanks for your comment. Is this typical when doing shows elsewhere? I have only done a couple of shows in other locations that did not require any kind of business tax certificate, one in Florida and the in South Georgia. I have done about 10 shows at the Savannah Riverwalk in the past two years and the only requirement was the "Savannah" business tax certificate. I highlight "Savannah" cause it does not say Georgia business tax certificate, but never needed any other verified certificates.

  • Wayne - We did a "First Saturday" show in Savannah about 6 years ago (nice little show in a nice riverfront venue). As I recall, the show wanted the Tax number in advance of the show. It was the only show we ever did in GA and it was a nightmare trying to get them to close the tax account. We had to do monthly reporting of zero sales until it was resolved. It was so painful I guess we should have done more shows in GA! Don't know if anything has changed since then.

  • I'm just starting out doing a few Arts & Crafts festivals presenting and selling my photography. When applying for a show in Savannah Georgia, they require you to have a Business Tax Certificate (cost $85) and in order to get that you also have to have a Private Employer E-Verify Affidavit and Affidavit Verifying Status for City Public Benefit Application. I don't consider what I'm doing as a business for me personally. I understand that most of the artist doing shows are doing it full time and it is a business for them. I was wondering if doing a show anywhere in Georgia do you need to apply for that Business Tax Certificate and do an Private Employer E-Verify Affidavit, etc. etc. I did a show last year in St Mary, GA and also Cocoa, FL and this was not any "Business" requirement for doing these shows.

  • I'm thinking of doing it as well, since it's so close to home. Maybe I can finally buy you that drink, Geoff - and for your birthday! :)

I have been trying to find more info, or a review. Not much luck. Does anyone know anything about it?

  • Please do it.

  • I'm doing this show...it's my birthday weekend and a good chance to have some quality time at St. Simons Island, a place I've driven past countless times on my way to and fro from up North, but never visited.

    I'll post a review.
