Who says summer has to end? The art world is heating up this fall, and there are two influential art shows you won't want to miss. Mark your calendars:
ART SAN DIEGO
ART SAN DIEGO is held in a 60,000 square-foot activity center in scenic Balboa Park, surrounded by beautiful landscaping, public art and spacious outdoor plazas at the north and south end of the building. Programming includes numerous special events, talks and performances over the course of the four-day event. Last year's show welcomed over 14,000 visitors and showcased over 80 exhibitors from across the globe, and this year's show will be even bigger.
SPECTRUM Miami
SPECTRUM Miami takes place in the trendy Wynwood Arts District, alongside the powerhouse shows of Art Basel, Art Miami, Scope and Miami Project. Each December, art lovers flock to Art Week Miami by the thousands for Miami Art Week, the fine art world's winter destination. SPECTRUM Miami hosts cocktail parties, live entertainment, music and dancing at Late Night parties and more.

We attended Artexpo in NYC some years ago and were surprised to see people from our biz there. Some were repeaters, some there for the first time. I think it takes a whole other mindset to make this leap into this scene, but some are able to make it work. Also, I know artists who have been able to make money at the Chicago SOFA show -- another expensive venue. Have heard more success from that.
I walked the ArtBasel/Art Miami scene. Saw a lot of our friends there. Later saw them on the circuit. Consensus is that most are lucky to break even, few or none would do it again.
Right, Barrie. These are big time events, not in the sense of a street art fair, but real galas that hope to attract the gallery crowd. Not sure about the details and surrounding scene in San Diego, although I do know an artist member here who has had success at these events and will be there. The Miami one is part of the big party at Art Basel.
They also own the long-running Artexpo in NYC.
Great Caesar's ghost! There we go. It's a $5,000 booth fee for a 10x10.
I wonder if we'd do better for ourselves by participating in such an expensive event? Well, I'll just have to wonder about it for now, and possibly forever.
I like San Diego much more than Miami. But I like Florida much better than California. We used to exhibit in San Diego Comic Con International and it was a hoot! Attendance for that one has far exceeded 100,000 people, and some of them are art collectors. We made really good sales there and also met some long-time patrons who've seen us elsewhere since.
So the Miami gig is competing with Art Basel? I don't think the San Diego gig is competing with any other show of this kind since I don't think others exist there.
