Bucktown Art Fair

 This is my first comment since I joined this site and, unfortunately, not a good one.

 Last weekend I did Bucktown Art fair, in Chicago and would like to point that it was not a good art fair. Not for me. Some people did well, but those with low price point. This was more of "community art fair" where everything and anything goes. I should have  known better, mia culpa...maxima!!

  But, I am glad to join this group of people and hope to help with my judgement as  well as here others.

  By the way, my show season 2011 was the best ever!! I prepared myself for the worst and got the best. I did;

St Paul,MN show in April, Broadripple, IN in May, Community Art fair in Hyde Park (57 St small sister) in Chicago, Salina KS in June, Fountain Square Art fest, Evanston ( last few years going down, but for me this year was a blast), Krasl Art Fair, St Joseph MI.

  I am getting ready for Lake Forest Il, Naperville, IL and on waiting list for great Peoria show that I did many many years with a lot success.

 So, this is for  beginning. Oh, I forgot that I took month off, from July 13-August 16 and went on well deserved vacation to my home country Croatia.

  Tutulu...

  • Hi Judy,

    thanks for your comment.

     Even thou I made much more than you, I expected even more. I don't like shows where customers ask

     "What is your best price"?!!! This was that kind of show.

     Unloading; we were ready, had a dolly, and in an hour were out of there, few blocks down on Western, eating  roasted pig in the Cuban restaurant!! That made me feel bit better,ha,ha!!

  • I love this show even though my sales vary wildly year to year. This year I did not make the booth fee back, yikes! It's hard for me to skip, it's only a mile from my house, and many years it is my best show of the year. It's just up and down for me. (Printmaking, priced $40-$500) I agree with Phil that there is more work that is not as mainstream, & I think that is a plus for me. Load-out, however, was an unmonitored nightmare on Lyndale Street.
  • This always is one of my best or worst show of the year. I still will do it again next year.
  • I'd also disagree. This was my first show in the city this year, my other six (including five Amdur shows) being in the suburbs. Weather was perfect, crowds were big and they were interested in looking and talking and buying, as opposed to Buffalo Grove and Glenview where long periods of time could go by without anyone even coming into the booth. Also don't know that I'd agree that this is a "community art fair" and certainly not in the sense of the Community Art Fair in Hyde Park. True, I didn't see any familiar artist faces from my other shows this summer, but  quality of what I saw was good overall, and a lot of it had a more edgy feel to it than what is seen in many shows, no doubt a reflection of Bucktown being a pretty young and hip neighborhood. Most of my work is high-end and I sold enough to be very pleased with the show.
  • Ana, I would have to disagree. I had a great experience there and although I saw some booths that were not very high quality, overall, I think it was a decent fair. My work sold in all my price ranges- granted, I'm a potter so my price points are low compared to say, painters but I was pretty happy with the results. I was in Krasl and 57th also.
