The wonderful thing about art shows and fairs is about meeting new and interesting people who appreciate and value the contributions of others. However, there are those out there who have this "Do you know who I am?" attitude who are those I'd personally like to avoid. The last time I checked unless you're Gergov or Jim Warren, I could care less about who you are and who "follows you" as these people are just those looking to use you for what you can do for them.
Gergov who sells his paintings for $20,000 for originals is someone I admire, respect and upon meeting him was the kindest soul in the world. Here is an artist who's work inspires the soul. Not only is he humble but he is graceous and happy you are a collector of his work. So that being said who the hell are these no body, losers who think they are someone? What makes you better then the artist just starting out or those working at it for years? Are you better then Peter Max? Are you better then Michael Goddard? Are you so admired that you forgot what its like to have passion for the work you create?
These real artists haven't forgotten who they are, who buys their work and who pays their bills. The "do you know who I am" artist of the world are the nobodies. They find out when times are tough, when they can't pay their bills or other things happen. They find out that they are in fact no one special. I know now to do my research and avoid the "do you know who I am?" artists at all costs as they are poisonous to your sold.
Emerging artists hold true to your hearts and don't ever let the "do you know who I am artists?" poison your souls. The day they look in the mirror on judgement day is the day they will see they are in fact no one.

I agree that they should be given the boot. I think people should boycott shows that are run by scum. I think if someone is unethical and treats the people exhibiting badly then they deserve it. I guess its all a live and learn experience. Like my mom always says "No one is better then you." and she's right when someone treats you badly you have every right to stand up for yourself and not give them the business.
Sam, you could always start that discussion as another thread.
Daniela and I communicated and I can say the situation did not involve an irate fellow artist, though the other person may also be an artist. Daniela applied to a show and was accepted. The show director after the fact (at the show) decided Daniels work was not what she wanted and proceeded to belittle and berate Daniela. Her accounting of her treatment in a forum resulted in further threats. (big surprise)
Having been threatened and misrepresented by a show director myself, I know they are usually trying to save face at being outed in a forum. The threats are empty (hopefully) You don't want to do their show anyway so it's less than a stab to the heart to be asked to not apply in the future... Oh, kill me now!
If we as artists apply to a show with our best images, that truly represent the work and that show accepts us, then we should be able to display and sell without harassment. What people like or dislike is very subjective, it's art, we all have an opinion. If a director finds fault with an entry, yet there was no offense to any rules of application, they need to acknowledge it's not what they are looking for and direct the jury as to their criteria for future events. Not ruin everyones show by being disruptive.
I agree this was very unprofessional specially in the light of "who she is" and would cause me to rant also.
Good luck with your painting and I hope you have better experiences in the future.
Sam I wish I could share the name but because of legal reasons and respect for the boards I can't say the name. My luck the crazy artist would start sending me threats again. However in a lighthearted note since we can go back to the beginning of the post of the "smug" artists, I learned that the "do you know who I am's" of the world are usually nobodies. In fact people usually laugh at them because their delusions of grandeur can be quite comical when just meeting people like this. You shake your head and wonder what delusions a person is suffering from to think that they own the art world. Crazy. No one owns anything in this world and things can change fast. I love unknown artists and talented artists. They are not better then me nor am I better then them. I will see Teri on the road.
Sometimes the show people aren't. There are some people we'd all like to have removed from a show for the proper reasons and the committee won't comply.

Terry if you would like to email me privately I will gladly give you all the details. It was after one show that I did that I received threats after leaving the show. I can tell you to have to contact a lawyer and the authorities that this situation. I was threatened and intimidated for no proper reason. It was a terrible experience and proper authorities were notified. Those running the show were not helpful at all.
What show was this? Did you talk to the show director about this person? Are you saying the threats escalated from a disagreement at a different show? You are very clear about the threats, not so much as to the reason for them.
Alision thank you for responding and with the threats I received it was necessary to contact the authorities. I am happy you have not encountered such a crazy situation in some ways the whole episode was surreal and I am happy that at least for now things are ok.
I've come across several stuck up artists in my day and I generally just avoid them. But this doesn't sound like just a stuck up artist. This sounds like a threatening nasty artist which I've never encountered. You did the right thing Daniela.
