Atalaya (Huntington Beach SC) or Neptune Festival?

These two shows are both being held on the weekend of Sept. 28-29-30.  Any opinions on which is the better show?  Neither is particularly expensive; both are attractive from a travel/intinerary standpoint.

Thanks!

  • stated it in my initial post, connie

  • What's the date?

  • Geoff, I did Atalaya years ago. Very lovely venue but must dolly from parking lot through a single wide door opening, so must take turns in and out. Many trips back and forth. It is run by SC Park Rangers and as nice as can be fellows. Hotels a problem as not many at that end of the beach area. You can stay in South Myrtle Beach and at that time of year get a break on a room. The crowds are not huge as most who come are local. The years I did it the quality of work was outstanding but can't advise about it currently.

My gut feeling is that although a wonderful show it just doesn't draw enough people.

    Good Luck with your decision

  • Geoff when I did Neptune I observed lots sos and low end things selling and given your new direction with bigger pieces it might not be a good fit for you. But the crowds are HUGE and it might be a good opportunity to move some smaller items. As John said the load out is very difficult, to make it easier get a room on the boardwalk that has a parking lot fronting the ocean then ask for a corresponding space.

  • Geoff, I'm contemplating between those two shows also. I've done the Neptune show and can tell you the setup and take down is difficult, requires a dolly (big distance). It attracts a large crowd, but they aren't big spenders. I did ok when I did it, but only because I was in the area (which I would be again). The quality of the work is far ranging and the inexpensive work usually sells best. If you have ever done the boardwalk show it's similar in setup and layout, but the quality of art is much less in general.

I've never done Atalaya. From what I understand the setup and load out is also difficult and requires a dolly. It doesn't attract as many people, but they might be more serious buyers. I wish I knew more on that show.

I'll look forward to responses. I'm leaning towards Neptune, just because it'll be closer to the shows I'm doing around that time. However, I always enjoy trying a new show.

  • Thanks Connie, I'll be heading down south after spending July and August up north.  I'll search Neptune; I know I've read about it but wanted to try to get a "compare and contrast."  ;-)

    Thanks!

  • Wish I could help you out, Geoff. We never did any shows in that area. Where are you traveling from, or is this part of a fall swing through the East?

I think there has been some talk here before about the Neptune Festival.
