Kalamazoo, MI has an Art Hop the first friday of every month in a huge warehouse space that houses artist studios. Check out Park Trades Center for more details. Also, just north of Detroit in the more affluent areas of Ferndale, Royal Oak and Birmingham.
The problem with Detroit is a common one. Artists live these places because it's cheap to live there....but it's cheap to live there because no one has money which could be used to buy art. Paducah KY has a wonderful arts district...but the artists that live there can't make a living there and still have to do show travel. While the work/sell/studio all the same place is a wonderful concept......it doesn't seem to work.
We were in Tubac a few weeks ago. There were several very nice art galleries. We also noticed a huge amount of buy/sell from Mexico. We went to Nogales the next day and saw EXACTLY the same production work we saw the previous day in Tubac, for a third of the price. I was disappointed by the huge amount of buy/sell in Tubac.
I am in Detroit. There are a lot of artists/studios here because rent is cheap and there is a LOT of space. A good place to work--not as good for selling due to economy's slow rebound in the area.
Google "artist studios" and the city name you're interested in. You'll find listings of studios and co-ops in the area, often in old houses or renovated factories.
Saugatuck, MI
Tubac AZ is also an artist community. It's south of Phoenix and Tucson near Nogales
I am in Sedona right now. I had no idea art was such a big thing here and in Arizona. I think it works out so great in Arizona because they have so many tourists that seem to be looking for nice pieces of art to take back home with them.
