10 Bits of Inspiration to Lift an Artist’s Spirits

Being an artist is a great life. Artists spend their careers creating and using what they create to help others see the world differently, change in positive ways, and infuse their own lives with creativity, but like any other job, being an artist comes with other worries like selling your wares, purchasing insurance, and creating an awesome online presence. Sometimes, it can be easy to forget why you wanted an artist’s life in the first place. Now more than ever, it's important to remember why you create.

HERE ARE 10 QUOTES TO REMIND YOU WHY CREATING ART IS WORTH ALL OF YOUR TIME AND DEDICATION:

  1. Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. -Thomas Merton
  2. To create one’s world in any of the arts takes courage. -Georgia O’Keefe
  3. Painting is a nail to which I fasten my ideas. -Georges Braque
  4. What art offers is space--a certain breathing room for the spirit. -John Updike
  5. Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity because if you’re passionate about something, then you’re more willing to take risks. -Yo-Yo Ma
  6. Creativity takes courage. -Henri Matisse
  7. If you are willing to do something that might not work, you are closer to being an artist. -Seth Godin
  8. I don’t want life to imitate art. I want life to be art. -Ernst Fischer
  9. I am interested in art as a means of living life; not as a means of making a living. -Robert Henri
  10. The artist sees what others can only catch a glimpse of. -Leonardo Da Vinci

  • Thank you for your inspiration Kathleen! I am in the northwest suburbs (Carpentersville) and the nearest big art communities are about 1/2 hour away in the Fox Valley area. I am looking into it. Just keep running into roadblocks. I'm still looking!

  • Susi, it sounds like this has been a very disconcerting time what with CoVid and the move.  Are there just no art associations near where you are?  Too often we think that Illinois means Chicago.  What about places where art is being taught?   Do any of your former art art association members aware of any people in your area where you might reach out and maybe form your own art group?  Are there art galleries near you?  Maybe they could help you reach out to their artists to create a connection.

I'm so sorry to hear about your artistic spirits dipping!  My first instinct is to try to find a fix and sometimes that is just not what is called for.  So if you have had it with suggestions, feel free to take what you want and leave all the rest behind.  (maybe even everything. ;)   Best wishes for a spirit renewal!

  • These are wonderful quotes. Needed for me right now because I moved back to Illinois last year during the pandemic and I feel disconnected. I moved to be near my daughter and new grandson. However, I'm having trouble getting established in art groups and shows here and am losing my mojo quick. Wondering how I can feel good about art again and reminding myself every day not to quit. It's been hitting harder the last couple of days... so sorry for the rant... When I was in Wisconsin, I was involved in many art associations and had my art in two galleries. One closed and the other decided to look for new artists because he was struggling during the pandemic and trying to keep his doors open. And it was a Wisconsin gallery and I moved to Illinois. I have taken on new mediums - finally getting comfortable with abstract and watercolor. Any thoughts are appreciated. I'm not one to quit...
