Is realism a lost art or is it making a comeback?

Seeing what juries select for exhibitions and the works that judges select for awards is interesting to me. It seems that pure realism had been overlooked often in favor of more "expressive" representations but that trend might be loosing ground; not dramatically so but somewhat. Often though the results can be telling of the preferences of the decision maker(s).  Personally, I enjoy being part of the American Artists Professional League…


Why do shows avoid placing similar work/show categories next to each other?

I notice how show organizers promote how they keep similar styles or categories apart. I spoke to one show organizer last week and she said that the artists don't want to be adjacent to similar "competitor" artists.  I just don't get that. I may not be well versed in art shows but I do have over 30 years of business and marketing experience. This separation is harmful to sales.

Certain media and styles each have venues that lean towards them versus other mediums and styles.  For example, I did a show in Lexington. I thought that the location would be ideal for my work.  It turned out that the show was organized by a gallery that specialized in abstracts and the show was pointed toward, and marketing concentrated to, their customer base.  A lot of fine crafts, some photography but no realism (or very few including me).  Actually, the closest was an impressionist.
