I have been participating in art shows for about for years.  People like my work and I think that my prices are low, but people aren't buying much.  I want to be fair but I also want to make some money.  What would you suggest for pricing paintings? My painting "The Watchful Eye of the Eagle" is 16" x 20" acrylic on stretched canvas.  Thanks! Mary Claire Roe

  • You might benefit from reading Alan Bamberger's website, artbusiness dot com.

HERE'S AN ARTICLE ON THERE ABOUT PRICING

Alan Bamberger has been an art writer for many years. Happy reading...and pricing. WOOHOO!

    • Pretty good article.

Mary, just to throw an actual number out there, because that's what you are asking... I'm going to say for a 16x20 original painting 1500-2000. Your style is realistic so it's obvious you took a while to paint it. (If it were modern and a few boring squares with a drip or two, taking all of 3 hours to make, I would say less than 750 ish)

Your style isn't modern, so I would not paint the wrap around sides, but invest in some mature quality frames. You can kick it up another 500 bucks if you do.

      My two cents!
  • Is it for a year or is it four years?

Only you can figure out what to price. Figuring out the market comes from skill and experience.

    • Hi Larry,

I meant to say 4 years.
      Sorry about the typos.

Thanks also for your replay.  Yes, I've been told that, so I guess I have some research to do.

So do you sell at shows and how long?  What caliber of shows?  Do you sell to collectors or the average buyer? Also as part of my research, what do you sell your 16" x 20" paintings for (if you do paintings)?  Sorry about all the question...I'm just trying to start figuring this out.

      • I'm a photographer and have done shows over 35 years. But that doesn't mean I've learned anything. When shows were good I did well. When shows tanked I did poorly.

What I have learned is that there is life after shows and for the past 12 years have been working with artists to improve their jury images and better their chances of getting into the shows they apply to. I also photograph artwork for artists now.
