I'm a photographer (nature/landscape) and doing my first show here in Tucson this fall. I've enjoyed reading many of the discussions here about mat sizes which has been very helpful.

For my own work, I am considering offering the following two sizes, and would like folks' opinions on whether they are considered too close to each other:

Size one: a 10 x 15 image matted to 16 x 20

Size two: a 14 x 20 image matted to 22 x 28

My images don't seem to do well at smaller sizes, so I leaning against doing anything smaller than the 10 x 15 / 16 x 20

Any advice would be appreciated!

Fred

  • A good question for my photography forum:

In general adjacent sizes compete with each other and cost you creating inventory that won't sell fast enough to pay for itself. I've always been an advocate of one small size and one large size only framing the large size. That way people decide which they want or can fit faster, completing their purchase and moving on making room in your booth for other potential customers.

    • Thank-you, Larry.

Do you think the above sizes I mention are "adjacent" or would be perceived as different enough in size?

      • Yes, I consider them adjacent sizes. There's nothing in between.

        Mine are 8x10 matted 11x14 and 16x20 (actually 14x20) matted 22x28.
