Caravan Tent

I'm ready to buy a tent for shows and it's down to a Caravan to save some money, or a Trimline.  I haven't read to many bad things about the Caravan.  Is the Caravan's frame sturdy enough to be able…Continue

I am not a photographer, so do I need a photographer to take pictures of my work and my booth to submit for jurying?  Will any photographer be able to take the pictures, or do they need to know about…Continue

Consignment Shops

I'm not sure where to put this topic, and since I'm a newb I'll put it here.  Do you price differently for a consignment shop than you do for a show?  When you take your stuff to a consignment shop…Continue

I finally settled on buying a Trimline and after today I don't regret my purchase. Today was the first time we used the Trimline in a show and wouldn't you know it, it was a very windy day. I got the stabar kit and my husband made pvc pipe…

I don't have smaller craft items, but I'm trying to come up with something. I would rather get a $5-$10 sale than no sale. I would prefer a higher priced sale, but the people that come into my booth and love my work, don't always have…

I vote for Flourish Trimline as well. It's a bit more work to put it up, but wind, won't take it down, and it provides nice natural light through the domed top (unless you're under a tree, LOL). Well made, fireproof, and has never…

I never take the canopy off the frame. It folds up nicely with the frame. I almost always put it up and down by myself. With one person putting it up, you just need to move one leg at a time, shaking it a little as you move it outward. Two tips -…

It's very easy to put up alone. Just put the canopy on before extending the legs. I've even seen people fold up the frame with the canopy still on it to speed the process even more.

Can the Caravan be put up by one person? I tried to youtube it and only found one, and it shows the Caravan needing 2 people to stretch it. Teri

I've been using a Caravan for 3 years now, with no issues except a sidewall zipper. It has survived wind that killed several EZ-ups at two different events. The best thing you can do to make it stiffer is buy a set of Sta-Bars from…

I had one for a few years before upgrading to a Light Dome. It is pretty light inside, and very sturdy. I did hang all sorts of stuff from the frame---both lights and display walls full of art. The downside for the Caravan is that it is water…

I did cash only at my first show a few weeks ago and lost a $65 sale because the customer didn't have the cash. That was a Saturday. By Monday I signed up for a credit card machine. I don't want to lose more sales like that. Teri

What kind of work do you have? I can recommend photographers but I'm the closest I know of to where you live. I'm not doing this to solicit work, though I won't turn it down. Give me a call and we'll see what can be worked…

Is there a photographer in the York/Lancaster area you can recommend for jury slides? Pittsburgh is just a tad far. Teri

Depends. Do you know how to photograph your work so your images are competitive in the jury room? It sounds like you don't know what a jury slide is, which is OK if your photographer does. Look at the photographs of artwork on this page and use…

Hi Teri, The consignment shops that I have dealt with sell at the price you set and take their cut from that. When pricing you need to figure your wholesale price and retail price. My prices online, at a show, and in a consignment shop are the same.…

Oh! I am a friend of Jennifer Swain who is with the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance (in PA), she can definitely help you too - put you in touch with some folks. They have a facebook page and website - google 'em!

I am willing to help, just not sure what kind of help you are seeking. I do have a blog which helps craft artists make sense of art and craft fairs (from booth design to pricing ones work). The address is www.quickcraftartisttips.blogspot.com and I also frequent this site adding comments and suggestions along the way. I have had a lot of great feedback regarding the advice I give via my blog and recommend at least looking there, as well as the older blog entries. But I also feel you will find some great info here via artfairinsiders.com as well. If you are trying to find some shows I highly recommend looking at the Art and Craft Fair Yellow Pages - a fantastic publication that covers art and craft fairs in the Mid-Atlantic region (PA and NY listings are a couple of pages long) as well as craftlister.com and don't forget to look at your local/state department of tourism websites. Let me know if any of this helps.
