S Brian Berkun commented on Reid Watts's blog post Airbnb
"My recent Airbnb experience was mixed. The room was very comfortable, a one bed lockoff at a condo complex. I guess the hosts can charge whatever they want for whatever they are renting. I got hooked by the low room cost $75 a night which was very…"

Mainstreet to the Rockies Downtown Frisco Art Festival, an HA event

This was the first time experience for this artist in Frisco, did an HA event in Redstone, UT years ago billed as Park City, UT a bait and switch? All spaces were marked for the early (5AM) load in time. Load in was remarkably not chaotic as was load out, everyone behaved themselves. Minimal presence of staff with fewer instructions at the time of load-in, most instructions were given via their website or online way ahead of the show.It has been years since I've done a mountain art show and…See More

S Brian Berkun replied to Richard L. Sherer's discussion Carbondale Mountain Fair, Carbondale, CO, July 27-29, 2018 Review
"I did this show years ago, late '80's or early '90's? A lot of "hippie" artists with pottery before the days of the fancy show tents, stuff was just cobbled together from whatever. It didn't impress me enough to go…"

S Brian Berkun replied to Richard L. Sherer's discussion Alpine Art Affair, Winter Park Colorado, 2018 Review
"I'm not seeing a lot of people in those photos is that pretty typical for this show? I stopped doing mountain shows in '95 because they were usually poorly attended and slow."

S Brian Berkun replied to Chris Doane's discussion Selling unmatted photos?
"There are at least two sides to every decision. Certainly true that some buyers will want to be able to "pick the mat color" and frame, etc for their print but I've always felt that selling prints that way was somewhat disingenuous as…"

It was OK in OKC, The Paseo Arts Festival

First time at this show. People were very engaged, enthusiastic and appreciative of the art and artists. They asked meaningful questions and showed a lot of interest. That interest translated into sales. Although some sales were out of the bin (they chose the largest of my matted pieces) many sales came off of the walls! It has been a long time since I was at a show that paid off as this one did.It should be noted that for many years, there has been a "scab" show adjacent to this one. The Paseo…See More

S Brian Berkun replied to Tara Sage's discussion Are art fairs a good starting point for unknown artists?
"I'm not 100% sure but I think Larry Berman is in the Pittsburgh area, you may have seen his name mentioned in other posts. He would be your go to guy to help with booth photos, he may even be able to set up your work in a tent he has? His ad is…"

"I wouldn't take the judging too seriously. Next year, except for maybe the top 5%, there will be a whole different set of scores. This is the one industry where the best don't always get in. It's solely based on taste and opinion.…"

Mark Zirinsky commented on S Brian Berkun's blog post Saint Louis Art Fair Jury Results
"Yes, very insightful to see the results. I was fascinated to see both the quality of the entries, and how low my score was with this jury. In a show a few months ago, of similar caliber as St Louis,  the jury in full came by as a group to my…"

Saint Louis Art Fair Jury Results

Wow! Just got the results from the Saint Louis Art Fair. In addition to the rejection notice I got you can see how the jury scored the show for all 4 rounds THEN you can compare the results with the images/submissions of the various artists! (they only use numbers to identify the applications) Very useful as an educational tool. It is also interesting to read the various artist statements to get a feel for how others introduce their work. I always struggle with that 100 or 200 word limit. Some…See More

S Brian Berkun replied to Allan Leon's discussion Whether to allow artwork photos or not

"I would have to disagree with the 200,000+ visitors, based on our 2 attempts to do this show.  One other note, it always seemed to be about 1/3rd jewelry.  I will say the items that seemed to sell the best were either edible items, yard…"

"500-600 I think, at last count, I heard that they had added spaces at some point. The show is booth art and craft. A lot of snow birds as-well-as others. Not so many families were seen this year."

What are the best things about art fairs
Being with other creative individuals.
Best show ever and why
Park City Utah 2006, great enthusiasm for my work which was expressed in purchases and compliments!
Worst show ever and why
Breckenridge, CO (year?) Memorial Day weekend show, it rained, it snowed, it was miserably cold, there may have been 12 people who came to look at the show in a big parking lot. Had to load out with everything wet. Yet, there was one other photographer who praised my work and suggested I raise my prices! ;-)

Fountain Hills Great Fair 2018, Where's the warm weather?! Where's the Buyers?!

2018 version of the Fountain Hills Great Fair in Fountain Hills, AZ an isolated community NE of Phoenix. I say isolated meaning that it grew up outside the boundaries of the larger metro area but still within reach. This was the third time I've attended this show with diminishing returns this year.

Just The Facts...

Show Hours and Dates: Fountain Hills Great Fair, Fountain Hills, AZ. Feb. 23-25, 2018, 10 - 5 each day but it helps to be open by…

I've been on and off with this show for years. Two years ago it was good (relative to this show) and last year it was worse than ever, I was stuck in a corner in the back and NO ONE ever goes to the back corner! This year the show was moved to the east side of the outlet mall on the north side of town. Some visitors were reported to have said they went to the old site and didn't know that it had been moved, no signs to speak of...Some folks I talked to said that they hoped the show would go…
