Cate, It is difficult to help you without more description of what you have already tried, and/or what you are currently displaying. How about a booth shot to show us?

Loved the comment about your ruse to be jeweler next year; good luck with the sex-change operation. ;-) Great story about Ellen: Isn't that the dream of everyone here, to sell $3K by answering the doorbell?

I'm sure Larry Berman will chime in, but feel free to ask him directly through AF Insiders...the business of booth shots is his business, and he's very helpful. Make sure to ask him about the relative merits of head-on (a.k.a. "3-wall") shots versus…

Good stuff, and words to live by. Equally as important is to have work at several price points. As a fine-art nature photographer, I have "bent" my low price point in order to conform to the market, i.e., what I see other photographers charging for…

Good post. I agree with your strategy, do it.

Me and my Florida birds just might have to do this one next year! Funny post, Nels. I will steal the line about the tripod for my photo workshops, ought to be worth a few yuks from the crowd!

good review--you are not only getting rich, but you are also becoming a very good story-teller,Nels

Dave's suggestion is great for the matted prints. For the framed work, consider purchasing some padded bags. They protect the frames from scratches, and glass from breaking, obviously...but the real advantage I've found is how much space they save!…

I think you have to take a good look at what you're donating to. One of the best ones I've participated in was at the"college Hill Arts Festival" in Cedar Falls Ia. It was for the youth tent. Nothing could be over $10.00 I think. Only kids were allo…

I made the mistake of offering an original my first show out, as I was very excited to be in my first show. I am attempting to do this as a business, not a hobby, so every little ding in my bottom line hurts. I now donate prints, something fairly p…

I have donated to synagogues and churches and as long as I've gotten a letter from them I've had no trouble writing off the donation. Same thing goes with my local library (not jewelry - books).

If you are donating to a group that is a 501C (charitable organization) and you get a letter, you should be able to write it off. Some shows that ask you to donate are not registered charitable organiztions.

The donation should be a tax write off, so first ask if you can get a letter to that effect. I will always donate when asked, and depending upon the show and the circumstances (what cause is it going to), I will donate a piece of lesser value, somet…

Hey there, nice, honest, easy to follow review! A venue I was pondering. If the regular "target market" isn't buying for so many of us, why not place a target on the non-target-market?" Just thinkin'

Estero Fine Arts Show @ Miromar Outlets (Feb 27-28)

"Snowbird Season" is in full swing here in SW Florida, and thankfully for our checkbooks, visitors and residents alike swarmed this show with their wallets open. This is the third February show at Miromar Outlets for Patty Narozny and HotWorks LLC (they have also done two fall shows). It's well advertised in both print and TV, and Patty always makes sure to send glossy-stock postcards touting the show to artists well in advance of the show date. Plus, Patty and her staff are very professional, w… Continue

"Crafts on the River" (a.k.a. "The Naples Alternative"), Feb. 19-21

Since I didn't apply to Naples National and a raft of expensive shows loomed in March, I decided that Fort Myers' downtown "Crafts on the River" would be a low-cost alternative. This non-juried, 3-day show had a booth fee of only $150, and is geared toward country craft artists and (easy, now!) buy/sell vendors. It's situated on the banks of the mighty Caloosahatchee River in downtown (or, as the Fort Myers powers-that-be are determined to call it: "The River District"). The event is an adjunct… Continue

Coconut Point, Estero FL Feb. 13-14

Finally, a show where I can honestly say I was too busy to walk around and talk with artists about how well they were doing (or not)!

Howard Alan is clearly targeting this show to be a new "flagship" show to replace his Naples 5th Avenue show, and from what I saw and experienced it just may do that in a few years. This was my strongest show of the year to date, and crowds were steady throughout the weekend. And except for the early morning hours each day, when it seemed customers forsoo… Continue

Sure, I can ban him, Geoff. Let me look over his latest contribution and I'll make a decision.

My son was the administrator for Bill O'Reilly's website and he said whenever a Democrat wandered in it made for an exciting time, so I've been letting Mike ride for a while.

Thanks for reaching out.
