Looking for Feedback on Booth Sitters

Rising booth fees. Where is this going?

It's possible that they are simply trying to recover some of the cost of security. Many items in the budget that used to be included as a matter of course are now being looked at as additional expens…

A.d.d. Artist...newbie from Michigan

Welcome Kirk, from one ADD artist to another. Actually, I think being ADD makes me far more creative than some of my contemporaries...they keep doing the same thing over and over, but I can't remembe…

How NOT to get accepted into a show

Um, ah, only if they're REALLY arty-farty ones. LOL. Thanks for the laugh, Skip!

Amy, the photos that show the entire piece on a neutral background would be preferred by the juries for my events. They like the whole image with nothing drawing attention away from it. For jewelry, they like to be able to see how a piece is finishe…

I agree with Lydia. As a show director, I often see applications eliminated because the photos were too "busy." Keep in mind that if there are 4 or 5 images per application and it's a good-sized show, that can add up to a lot of images coming before…

Amy, I cannot speak for other shows, only for those I have been in or direct. Our juries look for jewelry pictures that are sharp and clear and show detail. They prefer a neutral or plain background (see samples), with one image per picture. No text…

Sorry, I keep forgetting to sign my name. I'm Barbara Berney. I think most serious show directors want reputable artists, but that's what the jury process is for. There are some costs involved in jurying a show, which presumably the jury fee covers…

As a show director, I'm almost afraid to post. The only money I accept up front is the jury fee, which is nonrefundable. To take $50 for every application, regardless of whether the artist is accepted or not is, as far as I am concerned, unethical a…

Hi Lindsay, I have tried just about everything with my display over the years. One year, my friend and I used beautiful colored velvet. It looked great, but the jewelry just didn't show well on it. We had one of the prettiest booths, but it didn't…

First show ever
In 2000, the College of Medicine at Rockford hosted the first Art on the Lawn, a juried one-day show of fine arts and high end fine craft in various media. Now in our 11th year, the show is held on the grounds of Rockford College at 5050 East State Street in Rockford. I have directed the show since its inception. Always the second Sunday in June, the deadline to apply is usually mid-March.

There's a person behind the Art on the Lawn name

Hi, My name is Barbara Berney, and I'm an artist and art show director, an arts advocate, and busy volunteer trying to start a community school for the arts in Rockford, Illinois. I retired last April from the ball and chain desk job as the media services supervisor for the College of Medicine at Rockford, hoping to have more time to work on my own art. I've managed to do that, am represented regionally in Illinois and Wisconsin by five galleries, and occasionally do shows. I'm generally found at a booth in the two shows I'm managing.

I'm always interested in hearing from artists about what they like to have in a show and what they think makes a great show. I take my role as the show director seriously, and my goal is to make my shows the best they can be, kinda like the Army.

Send me a message or post a comment. I'd love to hear from you!

Hi Barbara,

I have actually been to Art on the Lawn. I lived in the Amana Colonies and Galena, Il for about 2 years. I had a small gallery in both places and did alot of shows in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, West Des Moines, Galena and Chicago. Have friends all over the area. I go back from time to time. Have a great day!
