Here's a story with some photos of the Gasparilla Art Festival in Tampa this weekend. I know some of our members are there. I am eagerly awaiting the news, plus the prize winners list. I believe that this show has the biggest prizes in the business.

Who was there?

  •  The big news was that after the gloomy forcast there was no rain. zip. just partly cloudy and sunny sky. Some artists packed up and left because of the weather report.  It was very windy on the street side and somewhat hot on the grass but with the space the commitee had to work with i think they ironed out a lot of problems and made a bad set up and tear down about as good as possible.  I liked it way more than previous years. Very heavy crowds also for Sat. and Sun. I paid to park across the street on sunday and teardown was a breeze.
  • Here is an article with all of the top winners.  http://www2.tbo.com/content/2011/mar/06/PMENEWSO12-local-winners-ma...
  • This is my second year attending the Gasparilla Art Festival as a patron.  From the outside looking in, it seemed much more organized than last year.  The food and entertainment was separated from the rows of tents which helped the flow of traffic considerably.  The art that was presented was top notch. I might be mistaken but it seemed that they had fewer artists showing this year than last. It was a warm day in Tampa and a little humid, which we are pretty used to, so the crowds were out in full force.  There is a high percentage of rain for Sunday, but hopefully it will move through quickly.  I hope everyone participating in the festival had a hugely successful weekend.  Maybe one of these years I will be exhibiting with you ;)
  • Wow, glass won again. $15k for best of show, that is really nice. They have $74k in prizes total. I hope they have sales to match the prizes.
    • Phillip has wonderful glass...Hooray
      • I have some nice work of his we picked up years ago.  Glad to hear he is still doing good work.
    • Geri, have you seen the winner's list? Who is the glass person? Two years ago my friend painter Michael Weber was the $15,000 winner - he had skipped the awards ceremony and was stunned the next day to find out.
