Shelving Ideas?

I am trying to figure out a good (and secure) way to setup a shelving system. I was thinking of somehow attaching uprights either wood or metal with shelving standards/brackets to my tables. I thought the tables would be good for support and stability. I cant think of a secure way to attach the uprights to the table. Maybe a 2 sided clamp of some sort? Any ideas or leads would be appreciated. Also, I dont intend on having much weight on the shelves. Thanks, Matt.

  • I use gridwall for a lot of my displays. It is not too heavy and you can use both gridwall and acrylic shelving with it. I tend to hand stuff on the vertical gridwall and then affix shelves for the other items.

Check on eBay - there's a lot of it out there.
  • Yeah, I actually saw just what I am explaining at a show I did this past weekend. I was a little hesitant to ask how they setup their system because I figured they wouldnt want me to bite their display. It was seemingly very simple. A few uprights with brackets were somehow attached/supported by a 4 ft table and allowed them to put 2 shelves above the table. I am stumped on how they did it!

  • I sell jewelry so my needs are different from yours I am sure. I bought some glass block windows and a wooden plank. Then I loosely drape fabric over it and put my jewelry forms on top. It has been fine but there is very little weight on it. For my next show I am going to experiment with gridwalls, brackets, and shelving. We will see how that goes

  • I would say it has a lot to do with your medium and the weight the shelves need to carry. I've seen everything from the glass "cube" shelves to hand-built wooden shelves.

There's one guy that has a booth next to me at one show who builds his shelves from the ground up each fair. He needs to ahve very sturdy shelving for his pottery, and therefore has heavy-duty wooden shelving in his booth. (Against regulations, I've seen him anchor them into the blacktop with a hammerdrill and long screws for a three-day fair!)

If you want to go the route of something semi-prefabricated, you could look at closetmaid or elfa shelving. I know elfa has free-standing shelving with a variety of types of shelves and looks.
