After a couple small shows last year I'm getting into the medium to large fairs here in the Ohio area.  I currently use rubbermaid containers to store and transport my 8x10 prints but need a larger alternative for my 18x24 and 20x30".  I just can't seem to find any large enough.  My work is matted prints and thin 3/4" gallery wrapped canvas - no frames do to the weight/expense.   I prefer a plastic type containers for extra weather protection but I'm open to any suggestions.  Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

  • For 18x24 frames, there are a couple of options. The 18 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck totes can be attached together by using Liquid Nails adhesive between the lids stuck face to face. Use a sharp box knife to open up thetops of the lids, leaving a ring. The two lids can now attach two tubs together, and will hold 8-10 frames with padding in between frames. There is another tub at Lowes that will take 18x24 fraames on their side. The height is right at 18" on the inside. This will take 15-16 frames, and the only problem is that it's heavy. I can stack two of these in my minivam behind the driver's seat. I can post pics of the lids if the description isn't clear.
  • Look into Convoy Art Boxes.  They are pricey but you can have them made to order for your size and they last a long time.  I love mine.

If you're brave you can also get some corrugated plastic and make your own but that stuff is nasty.  Think of a paper cut on steroids.

  • I found the perfect size for my 24x24's at Lowes. It's a 32 gallon tote which lets me store 10 24x24 framed about an inch thick with cardboard between every two. Of course it only has a 15 inch height but I don't have room to stack that size in a minivan.

    Also try Uline for containers.

  • I'm looking for the same thing.  Primarily the 18 x 24 frames.  I use a rather thin frame for that size so anything a little bigger than 18 x 24 would work.  I also need a good rubbermaid type of box for 16 x 20 frames.

I love the rubbermaid type of container, primarily for the weatherproofing.  I've made cardboard dividers for the boxes so that I can slip the pictures in quickly.  Makes tearing down at shows go quickly!
