I have a passion for painting and in the same time I enjoy designing and making jewelry. A friend suggested not to apply for both if I want to get accepted in any show. She  thinks it is considered not to be focused  and will not get accepted. Is that so?

  • In a Juried show, the jury wouldn't know that you were applying in two categories, because they don't see your name. You should have a seperate booth shot for each category that would represent what your booth would look like if you were only accepted into that category. Also, read the perspectus for each show carefully - there are a few shows out there that don't allow you to apply in two categories. I also paint and make jewelry, but rarely make jewelry anymore - and only apply to shows with my paintings. There are only so many hours in the day, and so I needed to chose a medium in which to focus all of my energy. You may find that you are spreading yourself too thin and need to chose one on which to focus.
  • Thanks for your very quick reply to my dilemma...I have been to many art fairs over the years and do not remember seeing two displays . It could be that i was not interested at the time and was noticing the artist's work only...:)))
Yes, I do understand that I have to apply separately for each medium. I also know that I will have to make the booth very presentable ( if I get accepted). They both will have to be artfully arranged to look pleasant to the eye and attractive to the customers... It will take some work, but that is not what scares me.
It means a lot to me, and i am sure all the newbies out there feel the same, that you share your experiences and give advice. It does make a blind man see ! The beginning its never easy... and I know it will be getting better after the first show... Still cant help to feel overwhelmed ! I am grateful in the same time to all of you that are ready at any time to give e helping hand . My sincere thank you!
  • What Larry says is true for shows in my area. For the shows I direct, we require separate application, jury fee and images for each category. The jury may accept one or both categories. If only one is accepted, the artist has the option of participating in just one category.

I have a passion for both jewelry and digital collage and often show in both at a show. I choose carefully the shows that I know (through networking, talking to show directors, reading reviews, etc.) to be good venues for my style of art. It can take a lot of work to get enough information to choose wisely, but it's definitely worth doing.

Also remember that good images of your work are critical for your success.

    Good luck!

  • You need to apply in both mediums with separate applications and be accepted with both to display both in your booth. That's at the better shows. If you apply to a lower level show that isn't really juried, you can probably get away with having both in your booth. But I'd call the show and ask to be sure.
