I am not sure what section of AFI to post this but here it is.  I met a a person at an art show who is opening an art gallery.   They are doing a call for artists right now.    I have noticed many people on AFI are thinking about trying their art out in galleries so I thought I would pass this info along.  Over the past 3 years my gallery sales have been way down, so I am not a big fan of galleries, but this may be good for others.

  • Hi Melanie, hi Robert!
Thing is, I figured I don't want to saturate the market in Atlanta with my work, and I find that the 5 words speed limit is a perfect fit for my excuse - beside the possibility that they may reject my submission too;)
    • Well I actually went ahead and did an online submission and no.... Im not going to say what my 5 line statement was :) I figure even if its not that good and they cant see beyond it to my work then maybe I dont need to be there.
  • I thought about submitting, but the 5 words speed limit is a bit intimidating for me:) Thanks for passing on the info!

I was contacted by a gallery owner after the Atlanta show in September, I agreed to consign my work after looked up the gallery and google around. I didn't expect too much and was just hoping that my customers from Atlanta will find me there. It turned out a nice surprise and the owner and her staffs are really working diligently on selling what she has from me. 3 pieces sold and 1 custom work in the first month is very good in my opinion - and I hope it last.
    • Good for you!

Nice to see Im not the only one who was intimidated by the 5 word statement. :)
      • If you are seriously interested in applying then just call them and ask them what they are looking for in 5 words. If they are not receptive to your phone call then it will give you an idea on what they will be like to work with.
        • That's a good pointer, I will do that with a gallery I'm thinking about submitting there
          Thanks again Melanie!
    • Thats great Kanchana.
  • My favorite is when I am at an art show and people ask me if I have my art at any local galleries. Sure go ahead and pay WAY more $$$$$$$$$$ and go to a gallery for the same work I have right here.

5 words. Time to get creative and really artsy.

Jacki, I agree with you about gallery sales. In order for your work to move you have to work it. You can't just hand it over and expect a gallery to do the work for you. I am on my way out of galleries and started doing art fairs a year ago instead. I have noticed many posts here on AFI that many artists on this forum are thinking of doing the reverse that is why I posted,
    • Yes, Melanie, you do have to "work it". A gallery owner doesn't always know what to say about your work. You are the best person to push your work. I wouldn't be opposed to having a few pieces in a gallery for exposure, but you have to plan on very few pieces of your work selling there. If you sell a piece, great! Also, if you do have a piece for sale at a gallery, you can use that to pad your resume. It looks good in your Bio.

  • I think it is great that there are galleries out there to sell artistic work, but I have never thought that that was a good venue to count on for many sales. It would be helpful for exposure, but an artist shouldn't really count of that to pay their bills. Thanks for sharing this gallery info here. There will be others who will be interested in the info.
