Hi all

I am trying to get help for shows and it id pretty hard to find people for the job.

I pay about 15 $ and hour and it is still not easy to find people.

How do you guys manage with that? any suggestions as to how and where to look for reliable people?

Thanks for all your help.

Matty

  • Matana, did I meet you at the Har Zion Art SHow over a year ago?

    • Oh I'm so sorry my memory

is not so good any more :-) ,where was it? (blush) I guess I really am getting old.

  • Matty, you need to be more specific in what you want an employee to do, how much supervision you can provide and how often and where they will work.  Even with simple and consistant answers, you will find it is difficult to do even in a tight economy.  Provide more detail and I'll give you some feedback.

    • SO I need some one to help with setups/brake dawns and sales. I am there but would like some one to be able to do shows for me even if I'm not there. it'd one to two shows a week depending on the season.

      Thanks for your help.

      • First of all, read your contract carefully - most art shows require that you must be there at all times.  That is why I had to cancel most of my summer shows because I had to have foot surgery and could not be in attendence at the shows.

Second, you are talking about part time help that is not consistent - that is hard.  Normally, employees want to know hours to be the same every week so they can count on a paycheck.  Are all your shows local?  no traveling?  No friends with young adult children who are unemployed.  You would need to be with them most of the time in the beginning so that you can train them and gain trust in them before you leave for short times.  I have a number of friends who pay friends to work with them but they are there with them in case of questions.

        • Hi Dianw

Thanks for response,I am aware of the 'artist attendance recruitment' policy bu t I do have other shows that doesn't require my attendance.

I do travel but not that much and when I travel I make the appropriate arrangements.

I know that the down side of the position is not a full time job,but I still wonder if any one here might have an idea  how we can over come the obstacle and find someone to help. My friends kids are at school usually and I would like some one more steady.

          • Actually I was thinking of older kids out of college without gainful employment.  I pay my son and his friends to help.  What about contacting local college art departments about an intern for local shows.  I have a friend who promotes craft shows and always gets interns to help her.  They learn about art show promotion and she gets the help she needs. I have another friend who is part of her church's unemployed group and I have thought about using members of that group should I ever need to.  I am also a member of my local etsy team and we always have members who want to do shows but don't know how.  They might be interested in local part time job from time to time while they learn the ropes.  Do you ever share a booth with another artist as a way to lessen expenses and cover time periods.  I know some who do that.  Just fly thoughts.

            • I usually like to have my own booth but was thinking of sharing a booth due to time limits. I would like to find some one who can do Saturdays and I'll do the Sundays since I don't work on Saturdays and some people who go to church prefer not to work on Sundays or would like to lower their costs ,that can work great for both of us. If you know any one or know how I can find some one to share a booth I'd like that.

I am in NY/NJ/LI/PA Philly, and some times do shows at MI and Chicago.

Thank you so much for all the great ideas I would look in to that.

Have a great weekend and good luck with your shows.

              • For sales help I can usually get help from any senior group, or condo senior association art group or club. but I cannot find anyone to put up and take down the tent and pack up. for putting up a tent, if my husband cannot be there, if I rent a tent, the tent providers do all that for you, but not the rest  or the take down. its a very hard situation. If we are not young and able bodied, i guess we cannot do shows.

                •  HI Daryl

I think Diane gave me some really good ideas, interns may be able to do the set/brake down.

Thanks for the advice I guess seniors can also be of a great help selling etc.

                  Have a great day.
