Changing Table Height - Reworking Booth

Like a lot of others, I am reworking my booth for 2013 shows. Larry Berman told me I needed to raise my table height to 40” so here is the solution I came up with. It’s simple and easy to do if you are faced with the same problem. I cut pieces of 1” ID conduit from scraps left over from other booth changes. This will fit nicely over the 1” OD table legs. I drilled holes though the conduit and table legs for the new legs, and secured the leg extensions with a bolt and wing nut. The extensions were color coded and numbered for each table.
My lower tables were skirted with expensive blue pleated fabric skirts made for made for a show I did at an indoor convention center. I would really like to use long grey pleated fabric skirts on the new table height but I am told jurors don’t like skirts. Jeeze it’s not like they were bed sheets or table cloths. Any feedback on this?

  • Another delima on this project. I bought my table skirts for an indoor show that required that all booth materials meet fire code standards. I called a retired high level fireman neighbor tonight and asked about wood paneling and thin plywood meeting these same indoor standards. "Not likely" but I need to do some more research on it. Indoor shows at convention centers are still an option with me. I doubt that jurors that don't like tables have ever considered this. My friend said that fire retardent plywood was made but it would probably run about $100 for a 4x8 sheet. Ahhhh the plot thickens and gets more frustrating.
  • Here's an article about a table I prepared for framing years ago.target-table2.jpg

    • Another way to solve the problem. 3/4" OD conduit inside the legs. I used the 1" as that was what I had as scrap. Can you elaborate about the pleated skirts? They would make my life a lot easier. I'm thinking they would look more professional than a plain painted panel on the tables even if I use flat paint.
  • Great idea with the leg extensions! I need to raise a couple of tables in my garage where I do matting and framing, and that will be easier on my back. A suggestion is to add some rubber feet to the pipes or you'll be punching holes in the ground on soft soil. Foot pads are readily available from hardware stores, although the best ones are crutch tips as they are wider and have more rubber on the bottom.

I can't help much with the pleated skirt as I use one myself on a 2'x4' table. I don't include it in the booth slide anymore, but it's used nonetheless. I hadn't heard that judges don't like pleated skirts :-(
    • I plan to get the crutch tips as I think what Home Depot has is only 1". I put 4"x4" x 3/4" blocks under legs when on grass. Thanks. I asked Larry to elaborate on skirts.
