Booth Shot!

Hey guys,

I was discussing with a friend at an art show about getting into shows and such and she recommended I do a clean booth shot, nothing in there but a limited amount of pieces. I thought it was an excellent idea so I took this and it looks sooooooooo barren. Maybe it's because I normally have more pieces on my walls, but let me know what you think? Do you think it can pass the test (note, I have not edited this photo AT ALL)

  • I see what youre going for but I think you over did it.  I like the 2 right walls, but your wasting considerable space with what i assume is a huge door in the back, maybe work several small pieces to the left wall to give the larger pieces a sense of scale or I would go with four large pieces, 2 top and 2 bottom(that's what I do).  If you are going with a gallery look and only have 10- 15 pieces its an easy matter to get a track light to shine on each piece.  Home depot is cheap.   Much more drama, lighting is EVERYTHING.  Light is what we do!  I always try to use lights even in a day show.  When the clouds roll in and everyone on the block is dark you will be a flame for the moths.  If you sell one or 2 additional small pieces or repros you will pay for the lights.  Im blathering on now, good luck!

    • By the way,  I disagree with Stephen, I don't think you need to set it up as at a fair but yes should have the same basic elements.  I usually show only a few bins to clean things up a bit.  The shows say it should be the same but this shot is only to get you in the show and I think the jury for that dosent care.  I've never been removed from a show in 30 years because my booth wasn't set up like my booth shot.

      • LOL. There are a few shows where committee members walk around to compare the application images to the work in the booth, but Jerry is right, I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble about the booth image.

Basically you want it to be more interesting, his ideas would help a lot.

Does anyone know of a show that not only shows the jury images on their website but also the booth shot? I know there are some that do. That would be helpful as a reference point, and also, Kim, you can find some on this site. Shannon Salisbury Bloom (?) did a whole series last year that would be helpful.

  • It is boring. It is not well lit. More would be better. Not only does it need to be clean it needs to be attractive and be another few points on your score.

  • I think you need to finish setting it up as it would be at a fair.
