Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
Would like to hear from people who have participated in the Brookside show in Kansas City and the Laumeyer Park show in St. Louis. With The Plaza show and the St. Louis Art Fair, one would hope some of their success would rub off on the earlier two shows. They run on adjoining weekends and it might make sense to do both of them back-to-back. And, since Bellville is the weenend after Laumeyer it has possibilities for a nice three-some - if one were lucky enough to get into all three. Any and all comments would be appreciated.

Look into Springfield (IL) Old Capitol also. It can be combined with at least two of the other shows.

Comment by Robin Ragsdale on January 31, 2012 at 11:11pm I have never sold at either, but can tell you the show at Laumeier Sculpture Park is very well attended. I've been to it as a visitor many times. I'm applying there this year as an artist. The main problem with that show is the time of year. It has been hit by severe storms several times. One year the whole thing was wiped out by a super cell. Only those that packed up Saturday night kept their tents. There's a photo of the disaster here: http://artfaircalendar.wordpress.com/tag/st-louis-art-fair/

Comment by Larry Berman on January 31, 2012 at 11:17pm Let me add something about Laumeier. I did it a few times in the mid 1990's and they offered spaces within their own large tents as well as to be able to use your own tent. I made the mistake of saving a few dollars by using my own tent and found that if it rains, the people stay mostly in the large show tents because they can walk from booth to booth without getting wet.

Comment by Warren Townsend on February 1, 2012 at 11:00am Don, I think a whole lot of artist thought the same thing. If you applied to the Brookside you should of gotten you notification if you got in or not. I did not make it, in the email they said they had over 1100 artist apply for the 170 artist spots.
Comment by Connie Mettler on February 1, 2012 at 12:54pm Woo hoo, Robin! Thanks for that link to my old blog, the predecessor of this site. I did a lot more writing in those days and not as much managing, but it is full of good info like you found here. That was a doozy of a storm at St. Louis a few years back.
Donna Potts at Brookside said she got so many applications last year that she didn't need me to do a call for artists for her this year as she was very pleased with the numbers. She was right, she got even more apps in 2012. The lucky thing for her on this show (not to say it isn't a solid one) is that it is on a date when there is little competition and the artists are also raring to go to make some money.
