My first regular show is this Saturday, so I'll let you know after that! From other observations this year, I do agree that 2010 will be better. The best example locally (Norfolk/VA Beach, VA) was at the Home & Garden Show a few weeks ago. They set…

I agree with Shoshana's suggestion, if the date works out. I was at their Virginia Beach show and wrote a report for ArtFairInsiders at http://www.artfairinsiders.com/profiles/blogs/art-awards-show-virginia-beach?xg_source=activity. For North Carol…

Not really a coastal show, but I'm doing the Currituck Art Extravaganza this Saturday, in Barco, NC. It's only a 5 hour show, but last year it was steady traffic and sales. I also do the two day Currituck Wildlife Festival in September, and haven't…

Don't forget you may have to carry that gridwall to your booth site. It does get heavy. Actually, you'll have to carry everything. After using a standard handtruck a few times, I bought a Rock N Roller Multicart. You can find them at http://www.hand

I'm looking for low power flourescent lights, and I hope to power them form a Power Pack. You can get the 110 volt power packs at Lowes, or Walmart, to use as emergency power. I've heard they will power the lights in a booth for a weekend, although…

Actually, the tubs are what I use for my framed prints. My 11 x 14 and smaller matted prints I carry in plastic milk crates. I probably should have mentioned that I use the heaviest corrugated cardboard I can find for my dividers, to protect the gla…

I have a pickup, so it's not as big an issue, but here's what I did. I measured my work then went down to Lowes and Target to find the plastic tubs that fit the best. Inside the tubs I put some thin foam on the bottom, and then made cardboard divide…

I'm in a similar boat. I've done a number of shows where lighting may have improved my sales, but none where it's a necessity. My wall panels are steel Gridwall, but I can probably attach something to them to mounts lights on. What I want to do is b…

Since I'm a photographer, it's easy to just run off another print. Lately I've been using double mats for all my matted work, but if I was making a print just for a donation, I might just use a single mat. I've also got several older cheap frames th…

Hi Bob, I live in Virginia, but do a couple North Carolina shows each year. They've been OK for me, and I'd like to do more. I'm especially interested in any Wildlife shows. I'm a nature/wildlife photographer and specialize in shore birds.

I will usually donate a picture when asked, but I put it in a cheaper frame than I usually sell. The shows that I donate to have either silent auctions that end just before the end of the show, or they have a live auction at the shows end, so gift c…

Right now Art Fairs are not my full time gig. My long range plan is to make it my "retirement" income or supplement in a few years. Meanwhile I'm still learning and I can see an improvement every year, so I think my long range plan is feasible. One…

I have heard of the shows, but not from an artist's point of view. I know people that get to the Christmas Show long before the doors open to get the good bargains! It's always a crowded show, like they represent on the website, but also I suspect i…

First show ever
1st Chick's Beach Art Show, August 2006. This was a very informal gathering of about 12-15 local artists. I didn't do another show until the next year (2007). The second show got me started doing more shows

What are the best things about art fairs
Meeting people and talking about your work. I do my photography to share my love of nature and wildlife with others.
Best show ever and why
That's a toss up. I love the Ocean View Art Shows and have participated in the last two (2007 & 2008). They are large shows, 60 to 70 artists, situated in a park along the Chesapeake Bay. The event is put on by artists, and 2009 will be the 47th year. The other show that I just did recently was the Currituck Art Extravaganza. It was a 5 hour (10 AM to 3 PM) show, well advertised, and inside. The locals really supported the show and the sales were great.
Worst show ever and why
Probably the Virginia Beach Art & Wine Festival. It was well advertised, but the people attending were more interested in the Wine than the Art.

Art Awards Show, Virginia Beach, VA

I just finished unpacking from the Art Awards Show, in Virginia Beach, VA, and wanted to send a quick report. I was there with a group of volunteers from the Chesapeake Bay Art Association, so my review doesn't reflect any of the artists that had booth space there. We did have a booth for our Association, and sold a few prints there.

The Art Awards Show had the best variety and quality of work that I have seen at an Art Show in a long time. The Artists were all the best if their fields… Continue

Show Report: 47th Ocean View Art Show

Just getting ready to unload the truck from the weekend's show at Ocean View, in Norfolk, VA. The show was a great one-day show - but it lasted two days! First, the location is Ocean View Beach Park, in Norfolk, VA. Despite the name, the park is on the Chesapeake Bay. It's a nice park with grassy fields and paved pathway winding through the middle. Chesapeake Bay Art Association has been putting on this show since 1962.

The weather didn't cooperate with us Friday or Saturday. Gusting winds both… Continue

Thanks. What I do is, well, unique. I want to be in more high end events and already do juried shows. Only once have I been juried out, but it was because they were looking for more 2d art and sculpture type craft, my items don't fit that bill. This is something I totally respect, but as some shows are finding it hard to "fill spaces" due to the recession and deadlines (as it seems most applicants are jewelry makers or painters/photographers these days) my items tend to be a welcomed change offering a nice alternative. This is pretty much why I contacted you, perhaps what I do might get some people thinking outside the box especially since it is all made by me, Made in the USA. Who knows ??? :-)

Dave, I am writing due to the post you left on the topic of show evaluations on the promoters group board... I have been looking to do some shows and thinking of branching out to VA. I don't have a show on the dates of the Ocean View Art Show and your post caught my attention. The question I have for you though is would my items fit into the event? I create all the work myself, but might not be considered "fine" art. I make my own potpourri, herbal bath teas and salts, air freshener sprays and even reed diffusers. I consider my work "nature" art. I also grow much of my own ingredients with the exception of dyed flowers and spices which I obtain from a New England supplier. But all the fragrances I make are original and all the potpourri (and other products) are my own original creations. I live and work from my own cottage style farm house in Reisterstown, MD and much of my work is all about capturing the bounty of what the Chesapeake Bay has to offer, especially when it comes to coastal living. To see photos of my work and info about my craft business check out www.bythebaybotanicals.com . Thanks, Michelle.
