I live in SE Utah and have done Aspen and Beaver Creek, as well as his new Redstone show in Park City. I'm selling upper-mid priced jewelry. Considering that Howard's Aspen show is the only game in town, you think it would be a better show. The show seems to have pretty low traffic, and the clientelle does not seem to be the same folks as the ones that own the homes there. I have only done marginally well there with my work. I've only done Beaver Creek once. It's my third choice for shows here that fall on that same weekend (Park City and Crested Butte). Most artists seem to do well in Beaver Creek, but again, that was not a good show for me...slow traffic, but I would be willing to give it another try.
On the other hand I REALLY liked the new Redstone show in Park City. I did better there than I did in the Kimball Arts center show. The venue is beautiful, parking is free, and the setup and takedown are easy. I also suspect that his new Gateway show in Salt Lake City will be a hit.
Lorie, I looked at your website and you won't be in the top 10%. you'd fit right in. Ha shows are not low end shows, they are high end. I did Aspen last year, professional working artist, professional prices.
About Grand Haven, I have no specific information. Alan’s deadlines are, in essence, deadlines until full. Many for-profit promoters have, or used to have, this system. It works for him, so he must see no reason to change it.
If you see 20-30 exhibitors listed, all that means is those are the ones he has definitely accepted. He is waiting for more qualified apps to come in. He may have already rejected many apps he felt were not suited. So the late deadline, in this case, is not a red flag. If you are in a competitive medium, the show may be full in yours. He has a cohort of artists who do many of his shows. They may also be those listed as already accepted.
Grand Haven was an existing show, then he took it over.
He has many detractors on art fair forums; I think many of the for-profit promoters do. But he advertises well. If there IS a market in the area of a given show, he will find it and target it effectively.
Medium balance for his shows will vary. If he feels crafty work sells best in one market, that’s what he accepts. That doesn’t mean that is what he will accept at another show. If he feels it is a high end market, then he will look for artists who can succeed in that market.
I am super lucky that my brother-in-law lives in El Jebel which is halfway between Glenwood and Aspen, so I park there. There is an RV park in El Jebel, and for a hotel; I would look toward Glenwood Springs- Sometimes the Hot Springs Pool has lodging packages. Or even New Castle for a hotel. Keep in mind the commute, Glenwood it about 50 minutes away, New Castle would add another 10mins to that drive.
