It seemed like a blessing when my son and his wife moved to Michigan because he used to live in the San Juan Islands! Now that I have a granddaughter, however, it feels like a million miles away! Bottom line, I need some shows in central and/or Western Michigan that fall in the fine craft category. There is one where he lives (Grand Rapids) but it appears to be for residents only. Any suggestions?

  • Pat, when you come to the Midwest/Michigan do not think of what you are doing as "craft." Our shows may be called "art shows", "art fairs", but in fact, embrace both fine art and fine craft. I don't know your work, but from what I've read from you on this site, truly believe you can be in ANY of the shows here. There are not pigeonholes like there are in the more Eastern events. It is all terminology and frankly, changes a little from region to region.

Do what Jacki suggested. Look at the lists on ArtFairCalendar.com and CallsforArtists.com. You'd be welcome at most of them.

    • Thanks everyone. Here in the East, I do art/craft shows or fine craft shows. I think Krasl is over my head. A good friend of mine does it and is over the moon about it. It does conflict with Chautauqua. I applied to E Lansing last year (that's where my son's hospital is. Well, not his hospital, the one where he works :) ) and I was rejected but, to be fair, it was a hastily thrown together app the day it was due. I'll work harder on it this year. I will do my due diligence. Whatever it takes to spend time with my Emma bean.  heh

  • Pat, also be sure to check out the www.Callsforartists.com website.  There are Michigan shows listed there as well.

  • Hey Pat, look at the Michigan page of the Art Fair Calendar.  We have a ton of shows on there and I am sure some of them must except fine craft. What about the Funky Ferndale show?

There is a little one in Jackson at Elle Sharp museum in June.  They have only about 30 artists and some of them looked like they would be in the fine craft category.
Battle Creek has 2 shows there.  East Lansing has a big show in June.  Gaylord has an arts & crafts fair there.  Davisburg has a Weekend in the Country in September.  Check out the Michigan page because there are plenty of shows that you would probably fit into.

  • Pentwater, run by the Junior Women's Club. One day, early July. Ludington, ludingtonartscenter.org. the week before Pentwater. Krasl, in St. Joseph, same weekend as Pentwater. Fallasberg Fall Festival, in mid Sept.

  • I guess what I am looking for is a juried art and craft show. My collage fits the art market, but the books are considered fine craft.

  • Can you use his address ? If you both have the same last name that would be a plus.  I dislike when the shows require you to have an address in their state. The people from out of town are the ones that bring in the extra revenue to the hotels and restaurants.

    • We no longer have the same last name, but I wouldn't be comfortable doing a show that is a celebration of a city's artists if that is what it is. Besides, I never get away with anything. I'd be the one shut down and dragged away in cuffs. heh

      • I very seldom travel out of state but have talked to others that tell me they use their hotel's address when they travel as their home address, depending on which state, which they use the same hotel all the time, so they had good repore with the hotel manager. I thinks its wrong guess they don't have a problem with it

      • Yes.
