Weights.....again.....

Sorry if this has been discussed to death, but I'm new and couldn't find this info in the archives.  I'm doing my first outdoor show next weekend in Toronto.  Got my tent (Trimline) and will be making weights tomorrow.  I'm doing the pvc pipe and concrete for now.  Here's my question.  Does it make any diff to suspend the weights from the top, or attach to my sta bars on the ground?  I'd rather not suspend, but if someone can convice me 'math-wise' that it's better, I'm willing to consider.

Thx so much.

P.s.  I've seen this happen before....don't want this to turn into a 'bash the cheaper tents' saga....just really need the facts..Trimline with sta bars....where's the best place to attach weights and why?

  • What Larry said. Keep them fastened parallel to your vertical tent corner poles. Suspending from the top with webbed tie-down straps is the easiest way. Loop a 12-15' strap around the corner at the top as close to the vertical pole as possible -- use the long hook, not the grippy end. This is easier and quicker than rope, and doesn't stretch like rope.

Use the other end with the cam buckle to tie off to the top end of the weight. Tighten the strap by pulling up on the short end of the strap (the unattached end) until the weight is about 1" off the ground. Use cable ties, rope, or as a last resort, a bungie cord, to fasten the weight at the bottom of the pole.

It took me longer to describe this than it does to actually do it.

    • Thanks for the info.  I guess I'm still not 100% clear on why with my sta bars and the thickness of the trimline poles, I just can't lay my weights on the ground and attach to my stabars?  However, you guys know what you're doing, so I'll assume there is a reason:)  Maybe I'm more concerned with it blowing away than swaying...  I'm sure after doing a number of outside shows, and seeing EVERYTHING happen, it will become clear:)

      Thx

      • Because if you lay the weights on the ground, they won't prevent the wind from blowing the upper part of the display. Having the weights hang from the corners vertically makes the top of the display heavier without raising the center of gravity.

        • Got it.  Makes sense now.  Off to Home Despot:)

  • Suspend from the top and have them tied to the corner poles just off the ground so they keep the center of gravity low and don't sway.
