I need some advice.  I applied to 6 of a promotors shows and was wait listed for all of them.  I know that applying  doesn't automatically get you into the show because you were there in previous years, but I feel so sad, hurt, disappointed, etc.,that I've been wait-listed on my 3rd year of doing this promotors shows.  "What did I do wrong?" kind of thing.

My wait list number for 5 of the 6 is #1 for my category and #2 for the last show.  So my question to this forum is what are my chances of getting into these shows being #1 on the wait list? What are the odds that a spot would be open.  Being #1 is like being on the edge, I'm there, yet I'm not there.  These shows have been good to me and I built a customer based in those areas.

Based on other posts here, it is recommended to call them to keep my name on their minds. Even if it is 1x a week or so. Which I will certainly do.

Should I call to find out why?

Do I apply to my option 2 shows for those particular weekends.  Do I show up on the day of the shows?

Has anyone been in this situation before?  Being #1 on the wait list?

Any and all feedback, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Patty

  • Hi Patty ...

Having done a number of the Amdur shows, I know from firsthand experience that they are very one-on-one when it comes to speaking and working with artists.  Give them a phone call and speak with Amy or Rose or another of their crew.   In my experience, they are straight shooters and will help you the best they can.

      Good luck!

    • Thanks Jeff, I will certainly do that.
  • Thanks Donna,  now having 3 days to process this situation, I have been evaluating my 2nd and 3rd options  for the weekends I had applied for AA shows.  I'm assuming AA won't start contacting wait-listed artists until after March and up until the day of the show.  I still plan to call and ask why or find out what my score was/comments.

If there is anyone else out there that has experienced this I would love to hear from you.  I read on another post here and also had a phone conversation regarding that AA has the habit of  giving multiple vendors in the same category the same Wait-list number (#1).  Has anyone been a victom of this?

Has anyone actually gone to the show on opening day and waited to see if there were any NO SHOWS? and if so, when did you arrive on site?  She indicates 8am is the deadline to sign-in for accepted artists, I assuming those that show up, will have to wait around until this time.

    Thanks

    Patty

  • Patty, I had a similar experience last year.  The previous year I had gotten into several of Amy's shows (5 or 6).  Been doing her shows for 5 years.  Last year I only got into 1 and waitlisted on the rest (I did get off the waitlist for a couple).  But the one thing is that last year I used the same slides as the previous 2 years.  They did the job one would say... but then... bam!  This year I updated my slides to show a broader scope of designs but still a cohesive body of work.  The work was fresh.  I also updated my booth shot.  This year I got into the ones I applied and am on the waitlist for Port Clinton (have never applied to that one before).

I have been lucky to get off the waitlist, but I would apply to other shows if there are ones you would like to do that are on the same weekend.  You never know which way it will go.  But, in my mind, better to have another slot in the calender and not count on getting off the waitlist.

  • I've done 4 of these 6 shows in 2010 using the same images.  I had great success at the 4 shows in 2010 and because of that re-applied in 2011.  I also have a customer base in these areas.  I feel my work is unqiue and different from what is normally at these shows.

    • Curious.  Obviously something's up.  My personal feeling would be to apply to other shows and not count on the wait list, but if you can get them to give you some feedback during your stay-in-touch calls maybe that would help.  Good luck!
  • I would apply to other shows.  You can't count on being called off the waitlist.  Have you juried with the same set of slides all three years, or was each application a new body of work?  If you're using the same set of slides and you keep getting wait-listed, I wouldn't apply again until I had new work for a new set of images.  Have you researched past shows to see who got in in your category and if your work fits in with it?  I've taken a few "good" shows off of my list this year because my work just doesn't fit with what is getting juried into those shows.

Don't give up.  It could be that these are not your shows.  Is there a reason you have your heart set on them?

  • The promoter is Amdur Productions.  Has anyone experienced a similar situation with them?
  • Depends on who the promoter is. Every promoter handles the waiting list differently. One promoter actually tells most artists that they are first on the list.
