transporting large canvases without a trailer?

Someone is giving me four 72x72 canvases and I need advice on getting them home (about 2 hours from me). I've transported 72x48 canvases previously on top of my SUV and it was a challenge - the amount of lift that creates is amazing.

I'd rather not rent a trailer if I can avoid it - anyone here have any "tricks" for tying down canvases on top of a vehicle? Last time I tied them down both directions, front to back and side to side and still had to hold on to them thru the sunroof and not exceed 35mph.

Oddest question of the week I'm sure )

  • Take the stretcher bars off and roll them up. Reassemble when home.

    • yeah I thought about that, my re-stretching skills are terrible. Carpal tunnel in both wrists (even after 2 surgeries). I was hoping someone had an solution like a windfoil that would direct the air over - I'm such a dreamer (and a sucker for free canvases)
