The watch people strike again

They are at Fountain Square in Evanston this weekend. First time I've seen them up close and personal, but I don't always walk entire shows.   Anyone know if they were at Wells seeing as it is the same organizer?

  • Lots of you with more experience and more contacts than me are trying to get the Promoters to change.   I loudly applaud that effort and contribute when I can (just ask the people I harassed in Evanston during teardown yesterday).  I think a multi-faceted approach might be good so I'm going to add that we can also try to  educate the consumer.  I wrote a new blog post today to try to get some discussion going - well it started as a vent and quickly veered toward education.  http://heartfirestudios.blogspot.com/

If you think I have a point feel free to send the link around.  If you think I could edit the post to make the point better I will gladly take constructive criticism.

  • Wow, yes those are obviously mass produced (although I do have to say they are cool)

I have not run into anything like this so far. Is this more a phenomenon of for-profit shows? So far all I have done is non-profit or community run shows, except for one, and have not run into this buy/sell thing that seems to be plaguing a lot of shows.

  • They are aliens from an island in the Pacific called Watchamacallit.  The only industry on the island are factories that produce machine made watches and watchbands.  Their economy was failing until they discovered a market in the US at art fairs.  It seems that even though art fairs were supposed to have artists who made there own art work and purchased space at these so called art fairs, the directors of these shows ignored there own rules and let them in to sell their stuff.  These "watch" people are not to be confused with the "stone" people.  They have their own island.

  • Strikes me that the shows do not have the same goals as we artists do. How many times do they need to see proof of buy sell before they act?

Same with that woman with embroidery mentioned on Holly's forum where the newspaper interview about her quotes the work as being made by something like nine different family members. And the interview was done at an art show.

    • Well I will get called uncivilized names like bomb thrower and a$%hole but I think I am finally coming around to the conclusion that artists, being a bunch of gutless wonders, are getting exactly what they deserve.  No one wants to organize or work for any change.  They only want to throw money at a useless trade union that has known about those embroidery freaks for YEARS and can do nothing about it and then the only people who have the guts to speak up, write passionately and publicly about all these problems are vilified.  Form a secret FB page and then whine up a big old storm if anyone dares break out of the group speak mold.

Yes indeed - you are all getting exactly what you deserve.  Domino mirrors, duck rocks, uninspired and derivative work, thefts, drunks, no sales, stiltwalkers, and dog pee booths - you are getting what you deserve because you won't fight for anything better.

ta ta - see ya'll in hell.

      • Holly, I spoke with 2 members of the promotors team and two representatives from the sponsoring chamber of commerce..  i expressed my feelings that despite the fact that i had acceptable sales two yeas running i doubt i will apply next year.  i cited the7+booths with blatant buy/sell and said that if they let that many in this year i have to assume there will be more next year.

one of the promotors was embarassed because he had bought a watch.  They have my card and claim they will be contacting me for more info.

      • What are watch people?

  • Want me to ask them if they were at Wells Street when I see them at Amdur's  show at the Glen in August???  (she said, tongue firmly in cheek)
