I am looking for ideas for a portable desk. I currently use a Rubbermade 3 drawer cart on wheels. The only problem I have is this is the 3rd one in as many years. They end up falling apart after the season. I have looked at the propanel desk, but it's heavy and a little expensive (yes I know if I just bought one I wouldn't have to replace the rubbermade one every year) Any ideas on another solution or how to make my own?

we bought drawers from the container store that stack - one on top of the other -- so when packing, it doesn't take a big junk of space. to keep drawers closed, my husband made a hole in the drawer, took a rope with a metal end to it (like a long nail without the point) - and we push that in the hole to close and pull out to open.
Target sells a table that is 20 by 48 inches. Perfect for use at shows because it takes up minimal room in or behind the booth. I've replaced my ProPanels desk with it so I can use it for framing also.
I extended the legs using 1/2 inch electric conduit and added a plywood top covered with the same color carpeting as my ProPanels. Here's an article about it:
We had a friend make us a wood desk - It had a top that was probably 18 wide by 24??? approximately. This top was fastened as the top to a box underneath. The box was on glides and could be opened and closed and it held our show office. The top of the desk was the size to fit on top of our show director's chairs. It was the size to fit so the top would fit on the armrests and the box hung beneath that. Are you getting the image?
Alternatively, we could set up two chairs and it would sit between the chairs. It was made and designed by the famous sculptor James Eaton, our friend from art fair days. We used it for years and sold it with our art fair equipment a few years ago.
Space in the van and in the booth was always an issue. Right? So this was small and compact and could tuck away easily. We had it fitted so it even had a lock.
I bought a rattan closet organizer from Bed, Bath & Beyond that stands about hip-high (I'm 5-10) and has six pretty large drawers on one side for supplies and a black painted "tabletop". I haven't tried putting wheels on it...I just dollly it wherever it needs to go.
