Photos For Jury

I am in a quandary. With so many important festival deadlines coming up I have decided to redo all of my jury slides for the 2011 season. But the question isn't what images to use but the format in which to present them in the best light. So I thought we should get the expert opinions of our compadres. In the past I have always shot my work from the front flat on as you can see with the image on the left. But I have always thought that maybe those photos were just to flat and didn't give enough dimension and interest to the work for the jury to see. So I am thinking of trying slides like what you see here. I would love to hear all your comments. If I go with one image should I use the style I have used in the past like the photo on the left part of the slide or do you think the image on the right would be a better choice? I personally don't really care for the one on the right because it is so much like all the other jury slides out there and I want something different.

One quick addition. I shouldn't say that I don't like one on the right. I do, I just prefer the one on the left.

The one on the left has a distracting reflection. Think in terms of what a juror sees in only a few seconds. The reflection looks like a different piece and it will cause the jurors to waste precious seconds trying to figure it out. Without the reflection the piece will appear stronger and larger in the allocated space.

I normally shoot the image with the reflection on the glass being much less pronounced. The bottom of the photo is also usually a lighter grey and you can tell that is a reflective base of some sort. I do agree with you that the photo used the reflection of the pendant almost looks as if I put it in after I took the photo. That is something I would need to correct. Here is another image I usually use. Thanks Larry for the info., I will keep your pointers in mind as I work these out.

You shouldn't be uploading anything larger than 700 pixels long dimension or square in the case of ZAPP images. Judgments can't be made on images so large you need to scroll to see them. 700 pixels square, the size you see them enlarged in your ZAPP profile. That's the same size the jurors see them for the 95% of the shows that use monitors.

I'm going to start a thread about how to post images.

Hijacking is what it's called when someone starts a new thread within a thread. It's not addressed to you personally but it's good forum etiquette to keep the subject on topic. That's why I started a completely new thread to expand on the image questions.

I think the reflection is extremely distracting and the pieces (beautiful, by the way) would display much better without it.

I am also a photographer and I like the dimension on the right. The only thing I would say is that I notice more of the colors in the one on the left. I would try to accentuate the colors by turning it a bit more if you can. Otherwise, I think the one on the right shows the whole piece as it relates to itself (Scale).
