mat cutter problem

Approaching wit's end here. I've been using a logan 650 for years. I use the "straight" side mostly for cutting my book covers (3X utility board) and scoring fome core. The mat cutting side works fine, but the straight side is chewing up the point of the blades. After one cut. I have cleaned out the channel that the blade runs through. I've adjusted the blade every way I can. I don't know why it is doing this. Does it need to be adjusted? Is that possible? Any ideas?

  • Sounds like it's dragging on the bottom of the channel. Remove the blade and check the adjustment screw for the depth of the straight blade to make sure it's all the way in. For 3X board the bottom screw should be all the way in (3/16"). Normal mat board is 4X, so it may be dragging a bit.

If that's not the problem, it may be contacting the side of the channel. A backer board might help, although usually with the 650 you don't need a backer to make straight cuts at all. But with 2x or 3x, the blade may just be a little long without it.

The Logan uses the same blade for both straight and bevel cuts, Larry, if you're not familiar with this machine. It does use a heavier blade to cut 8-ply.

    • Thanks, Jim. I'm about to go up and apply all suggestions :) I'm glad to be using the right blades for both, I was concerned about that.

  • I know this is possibly a dumb question to ask, but could you somehow have 2 blades in the cutter?  This will do exactly as you describe.  Sometimes the blades will stick together badly out of the package.

    • They do stick together, but I checkd and it's a single. Thanks, though :)

  • Different blades for straight and bevel cuts.

Try using a second piece of mat board underneath. The blade should go part way through the under mat. That enables the blades to last longer.

A second thought is that if you have a new batch of blades, they might be defective.

Or the blade might be sticking out a hair too far and hitting the bottom of the channel.

    • Thanks, Larry. I like the idea of cutting over another board. It is a new box of blades. Can a whole box be defective? Most likely it's out a hair too far. I always struggle with that.  OK, I'm going up there!

wish me luck and thanks again.
