There have been several recent posts and suggestions about problems navigating on Art Fair Insiders and I am absolutely interested in any ideas on how to improve the website so that you can find information and post information in the places where others will most likely find it.

Like you, I wear many hats, and am not able to always be here and respond to your comments, but that is also a good thing, it seems to allow a good flow of conversation and after all, this site is for you.

What do you think would make this site more accessible and helpful to you?

  • I like Leo's suggestions especially the "Newbie" section.  Also, this should be a restricted area in that you have to post x amount of posts, lets say 5, before you can get into the general area.  That would let subtly let people know that they need to contribute.  Also, it would keep out the spammers, etc.

I think there should be more well defined categories. The show review section has other posts besides show reviews.

  • From a relatively new user:  It would be really handy to have a "Posts since your last visit" or "New posts" from all categories on the Main page.
  • As a newbie, I'm trying to get a feel for who everyone is. I'd love to have an easier way to find the website or see the work of the people posting. If clicking on the person's name led to their profile, or if there was an option to have an automatic signature with a website link appear when you posted, then people could opt to do that if they were okay with other members seeing their work. It would help me put their comments in perspective.

  • I'd like to see more information on shows in the south. It seems as if most shows on this site are in the north.
    • Hi Peggy, -- good suggestion, but that is not under my control. The show information comes from the members -- unfortunately, I cannot supply it all! Although I often get emails from people who want to know how to participate in "my shows" -- they are referring to all the events listed on ArtFairCalendar.com -- as though I could handle all of that. LOL.

In the colder months of the year you will see more reports from the southern shows, it's a seasonal thing here.

If you are a Southerner who participates in Southern shows -- please share your experiences here and encourage your friends to participate also. Our goal is to have representation from across the country in these events.
  • Good morning Connie, my one suggestion would be to maybe break the show reports and blogs into geographic sections (if it is already, I have not figured out how to use it!). The majority of the shows hold no interest to me being mid-west or west coast. I travel about 15 hours max to a show (which covers most of the eastern seaboard. Also, in the same vein, perhaps a simple bit of tag information when you are posting in that category such as -

    Place

    Show name

    Date

    Thank you for your time.

    Love and Light,
    Jonathan
  • Putting "show reviews" in the blog makes it really difficult to find needed information. I wish there were a list of shows which people had reviewed, and then you could click on each show to see a list of reviews. The main reason I joined this site was to find out which shows were good (especially for painters!) and which ones were a waste of time & money. I am finding this very difficult to do.

However, with clickable links going to a separate area on the site, we could access reviews easily, see whether or not reviews of a show are consistent over time, enable multiple reviews per show (important, since a reviewer doing sculpture might have a different perspective than a reviewer in textiles...) and it would be easier for people to add reviews and comments. Also, there should be a space in the header for each review for the reviewer's media as well as their name.
  • Maybe this is already included on the site & I haven't found, if not it would be extremely help if there was a section for "Show Reviews, Questions & Opinions searchable by show name, city or state.

    Thanks!
    Kelley
    • That's what the blog section is. Link at the top of the page.

  • I'm still new to this website, I recently "liked" the Facebook site as a way to keep up with new posts, as I use Facebook a lot and find it's format a great way to keep current. Overall I think AFI is great and has the potential to be a major player in helping us show artists, via us ourselves making it work. I understand your situation and am most grateful for the job you are doing at juggling your many hats while keeping AFI viable. I'll keep looking at site design and ease of use and provide my feedback.
