Lighting recommendations

I am doing my first show with late hours and electricity and need some recommendations on lighting.  What is the best approach?  I have a bar that will fit across the tent to hold lights.  Are there any that will fit over the top bar of a Light dome?  Incandescent, halogen, or LED?  Who sells it?  Help!  Ive got a month to figure this out...

  • Plus, halogen lights get VERY hot, both for the bulb, and hot for the customer. Standing near them is no fun. The wattage that they pull is 'reDQlus' (to coin a no popular phrase). In the very beginning, we used to use clip-on lights, but found that they didn't give us enough light, and, the color wasn't good on the jewelry. Now, we use flood florescent bulbs-they give you a wide spread of light for an outdoor show. And, we only need to use 4-6 of them. For an indoor show, well, that's a lot more complicated.
  • I use track lighting.  Two tracks with a total of 8 or 9 fixtures distributed across the two tracks.  I use compact florescent flood lights.  They pull 11 watts each for a total of less than 100.  They light the tent brilliantly at night.  I run them all day and they also help during cloudy periods.  LEDs use a little less power but are a LOT more expensive.  Incandescent and Halogen bulbs pull a lot more power.

    • What kind of flourescents do you use - daylight, warm or cool?  What do you think gives the best color rendition?
      • It is a question of taste. The color rendition index is about the same for all three. I don't remember off the top of my head which one I am using, but I suspect it is the warm white. I use 5000K tubes in my studio however.
  • Hi Leslie,

I have two of these connected together on an 8 foot 1x2 that can be supported across your Light Dome. I used to clip them onto 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch electric conduit that slid inside each other so it could be connected diagonally across my booth. I no longer have the electric conduit but I still have the lights.

For something simpler, I recommend using small clip on reflector lights (that take household bulbs) that you can clip onto the frame at the top of the Light Dome.

You're welcome to borrow either. What show are you doing?

    • I am doing the State Street Ann Arbor show in July.  I would love to borrow your lights.  I am so sorry to hear about Mary's ankle.  Hope she is feeling better.  Your new puppy is very cute!  I also have some things I would like you to photograph, so maybe we can set up a time that is convenient for you in the next few weeks.

      Thanks, Leslie
