I am a potter and work in both stoneware and porcelain.  I carve images of foliage and animals through layers of colored slip onto stoneware, and I apply slip ( like decorating a cake)  in foliage designs onto porcelain.  This makes two distinct "lines" of work, which relate to one another beautifully in color, subject and style and look great in the booth together.

My strongest collection of jury photos is a carved stoneware grouping.  Although I have been accepted to shows with a mixed grouping, the tremendous competition for better shows causes me to want to put my best grouping forward.

My question is:  If I jury in with only carved pieces, can I still exhibit my porcelain work in my booth?

I wondered if the following things might weigh in:  An artist's statement which describes/includes both processes;  A booth shot which includes both lines;  The porcelain line comprising 40% or less of the work in the booth (can artists display new work in addition to their juried work?).

Thanks for reading and I really appreciate this site and all the helpful people and information.  Hoping for some input before my next round of submissions on March 1st.

Thanks,

Teresa Wooden

  • You might be able to get away with it if you have a lesser percentage of the other work represented in your booth picture.

And some shows allow a percent of new but different work in the booth even though it might not have been in the booth picture.

    • Well......lets pretend I am Leonardo Da Vinci......and I have Mona Lisa and the Last Supper in my booth slide along with some drawings and lessor works......gee I dont get into most shows....sorry to me, Leonardo, but the jury wants a consistant theme......you need to paint more Monas or Suppers but not both.....and the drawings.....forget it!....and dirt floors like the poor people of Italy had at Leonardo time....forget it!.....you, Leonardo, are not in!

So really what we are doing is playing a game here with this booth slide.....And you bet Ill play this foolish game....but just so everyone knows it is foolish....so I do appreciate Larry's 26 tips.....helps me to play this foolish game.

Of course, we could do like Artstreet of Green Bay does....not require a booth slide......what is this.....a major show that does not require a booth slide.....yes it is heresy.....but it makes me feel goooooood.......so dont listen to me.....listen to what Artstreet does in not requiring a booth slide....

      • Milwaukee Lakefront, one of the top shows in the country, requires six images but no booth image.

        • Art in the Pearl also does not require a booth shot.
