  • It's a Quiet Weekend in Art Fair Land (March 29-31, 2013)

-- what's everyone doing to celebrate?

I have been ill since Christmas and am finally starting to feel better. I have not done a single show yet this year ... and ... I am very glad I did not waste the time and money to go to Kalamazoo with my girlfriend. She says the show is awful (low traffic, lots of lookers). I think I will spend so time looking at the Summer and Fall shows and plan a much, much, much reduced schedule this year.

  • I spent the weekend on Chincoteague Island, Virginia.  The Chamber of Commerce was sponsoring the 34th annual Decoy Carvers and Art show on Friday and Saturday.  It's a nice show, done inside the school gym and cafeteria.  The crowds were good, but not buying a lot.  I lost money on the show itself, but I hope to make it back through photos I took that weekend.

There was recently a TV show on PBS about the decoy carvers of the Eastern Shore.  The show was quite good, and featured many of the carvers that were in the show this weekend.  I think it drove their sales up, but didn't help the painters and photographers much!

    • I've done two carver shows and will never do a third.  It's wonderful work, but draws a niche crowd that is not interested in spending money on anything other than wildlife carving.

    • makes sense, doesn't it, Dave -- they were the draw and the collectors were there for them and the rest of you were "hopefuls" for the rest of the people. Still, sometimes this kind of event works out when you get introduced to a new audience. Right?

  • Had my second show of the autumn season (downunder) today - Saturday here btw!   I did a local Maker's Market which is a yearly market done in concert with the farmer's market, which has a definite gourmet flair.  Held smack bang in the middle of the town which is full of visitors for the Easter long weekend.    It was bumper to bumper around the outside booths and inside we had waves of people through.  This is only a 5 hour show so very happy with the results, selling my highest priced piece at 8.30am (unheard of for me selling something that early - but the customer was on a mission!!).     Steady sales throughout the morning for me stopping about 1/2 hour before the show closed.

There was (for a change) a painter and photographer near me - they were the only ones there - last year's mosaic, ceramics and glass was nowhere to be found, but apart from small cards and prints I didn't see any large art walk out the door.

    • Jazz Fest, that is.
    • Good for you Annette! Congrats.
I'm visiting my children in Los Angeles and anticipating a frantic egg hunt in the afternoon.
Geoff, did you do this show last year?
Greg, have you done jazz test on the past?
      • Connie...yes, I was in Jazz Fest last year...What a fantastic show. I am very much looking forward to doing it again.

  • Heading north by slow boat.  We moved the van up on Monday.  Our next show isn't until May 4-5.

  • Cooking up some delicimious Rabbit and Sausage Gumbo for Sunday and then preparing for Fest For All the following weekend and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest a few weeks afterwards.
