IPad or IPhone...

This thread has really helped me out today- I paid a chuck of money to get out of my merchant account- since I only do about 6-8 shows a year it was really killing me!

I do have an iphone but we are thinking about an ipad purchase for the house- would one be recommended over the other?

  • Besides all of the other great things one can do with the iPad, we bought the filemaker application which is what our business database runs on. When we are at a show, we have access to all of our exhibitor files and data. If someone is looking for a jeweler from Pennsylvania who was in our Brookdale show last year, we can help them. If we need someone's cell phone number, it is right there.

Plus, we can watch Netflix in the hotel room! We love it!

    • I have an Ally by Verizon and love it. Verizon has great coverage, I've been with Verizon for years so never mind upgrading my package for an additional 2 years. I would not-at this point-ever go with another carrier. I paid for the unlimited data package precisely so I could travel and continue to respond to clients-maintaining the 'illusion' that I'm hard at work-they don't need to know I'm hard at work outside in some fabulous location painting!  I'll be talking with a local bank that SWORE they could hook me up with a merchant VISA account that would work with one phone call so I could accept credit cards at shows. The bank SWORE-she was very adamant that she could save me money on fees using her bank's method instead of using pPaypal. I'll keep you posted.
  • Which carrier has the best coverage and which has the best price in data plans. I've read that Verizon has better (quality) coverage but which has the best price in data plans.

By the way, I spoke to ZAPP today and currently they have no plans to create an iPad app for ZAPP. But I think if there is enough demand.... Currently you can't upload images from an iPad because the form can't see the path because the iPad file system is locked. That's why an app is required.

    • I don't know, as I have at&t, so haven't looked at verizon. Sigh.

I think they are pretty equal.

  • We debated this long and hard and finally decided on an iPad over an iPhone.

Why? The worst things smart phones do is be a phone. I knew my hub would kill me if we bought a phone that didn't function well.

We didn't want to sign up with At&t for 2 years. We believe (and now know) their coverage is not as good as Verizon our current cellphone carrier.

The iPad and At&t allows for monthly plans (no 2 year contract) so we can get on their 3-d network (which is MUCH smaller and weaker then they say) for the months we are traveling and beyond wifi range. We can then drop off, during our stay at home months.

If I was making the decision today I'd get my iPad from Verizon.

    My experience:

For those who like At&t I'm glad you get good service from them. But last summer as we traveled for shows we found the At&t connections our iPad were getting, very inferior to the Verizon ones our phone was getting.

All that being said & carriers aside. We love our iPad! It is wonderful when we travel (do get a 3g-wifi model). We find coffee, subway's, the show, parking with it. It entertains us while driving across Wyoming (huge state.) and we get weather reports. There's much more about it, but I think an iPad or a smart phone is a must for show artists.

  • I have both and have a SQuare, tho haven't used it yet [other than in a $10 test run with my husband's credit card...I was honest and didn't add the 0-0-0-0]  - I like my iPad and it's great for travel and to display images - the iPad does more and differently from the iPhone - it's certainly easier on the eyes.  And I can use the Square with it as well as the iPhone....haven't yet done so.  Good luck
  • Depends on how you are going to use it.  iPad is great for all things with the larger screen.  But if you want to use it at shows for sending in credit card transactions you would want to get it with 3G and a wireless plan.

I like my mine since I can show customers other photos I have available but not on display.
