I know the Florida art fair season has started, because half my friends are way South of here. Here's my question to them: How is the the season going so far? What's the lay of the land? I'm thinking the season might start a little slow. But was reading in a travel magazine that the businesses in Florida were advertising to all the easily driveable states to bring in the tourists. I'm hoping that with the lower price of gas and the expense of flying that people, at least from the Southern states, are going to be lured for a less expensive vacation to Florida.

  • I did Lake Ridge Winery & Vineyards, February ( "The 18th Annual Winefest Festival" ) and March ( "The 1st Annual Wine & Seafood Festival" ) shows. The February three day show was excellant for the majority of the craft vendors selling items under fifty dollars. My impression is this show is not for someone selling fine art. The show was well attended all three days, with Saturday being my big sale day. The March two day show was also well attended but most craft vendors reported slow sales. My next door neighbor, selling fine art, reported his sales would not cover expenses.
  • Just a link but check the blog for my reviews of Fla. shows in January. Been doing shows 35 years and I know how to survive. Hi Weber--spent all that Gasparilla prize money yet. Nels
  • The Melbourne Main Street show sucked. I never do good close to home for some reason and they were 40 artists short of last year. I also did the Halifax Art Festival which is one of my favs. I always do well there and have actually been selling at least one original in all of the shows I've done since fall of 2007. (man, I hope I don'y jinx myself!) The Cape Coral festival was one of the best layouts and most well organized show I've ever seen. The rotary did a great job but I also find that the booth fees are getting quite out of hand.

I will never do another Howard Alan event either because they are terrible to deal with, unorganized and their booth fees are way out there. All are currently over 400 dollars, like we artists have lots of extra money to throw away. I'd rather spend mine on some new brushes and paint.

So far, I have covered my expenses at the shows and even made a little, but people aren't spending. I know it's the economic downturn and I can only hope that it changes for the better. I have 4 shows in the next five weeks, so I will probably write more then. Good luck to all at their shows!
  • didn't book any fla. shows for the 1st time ever,,but getting too broke just sitting waiting for spring...might take off and try something..there's no jobs in this area of appalachia...i don't trust the economy...i'm mostly high end.and feel like my market isn't out there right now..i'm applying for real jobs...assistant professor..or glass fabricator...even if i land one nothing starts right away...so i'm glad this sight is here...now that i'm almost through with resumes..i might hit the road for miami get my work out of that gallery..where its just sitting... and crash a show...

  • Here are this weekend's reports from Florida and the well-attended Las Olas Art Fair in Fort Lauderdale. It is a good article and explores attitudes and choices artists are making to sell their art: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/fort_lauderdale/sfl-flbl...
  • And kicking off 2009 here's a link to the Naples New Year's Day fair presented by Howard Alan, from the Naples News: http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2008/dec/27/naples-art-fair-attracts...
  • I am curious as to how judging at art shows works. It always seems that the same people always win, and often with the same works. "Same pieces, different show." It seems to me there is plenty of new and innovative creations out there, so why do the judges always pick the same old stuff? I guess it must be political. I am not speaking for myself but for the many qualified pieces from artists that are never even picked for judging?
    • I'm interested in this topic also. I haven't entered a juried show yet, because I get intimidated by the work I've seen at these shows. I would appreciate any insight from any of our members.
