Does tent color make a difference?

So, I have my first outdoor show this weekend (YPSIFest in Ypsilanti, MI) and my tent does not arrive in the mail until sometime on Friday. The event starts at 2pm Friday. Rather than risk not having it in time or setting up at the very last minute, I'm borrowing a tent from my day job. The only problem is that it's blue. Fortunately YPSIFest says they don't care what color our tent is.

So, my question is, does the color of your tent make any difference at all? I know white is the standard color, but part of me is wondering if my blue tent will stand out more in a sea of white tents, and maybe get more attention.

  • I had picked up a yellow tent thinking I would stand out from the rest of the vendors. That worked, but I had problems because the yellow tent changed the color of my products. I make pens and couldn't tell the difference between the gold versus silver finish. I had to take the pens into the sunlight before I could determine the finish. Long story short... I only used the tent once and ordered a white tent.

  • I got the new tent in time for the show and was able to set up in a different location and just transfer my setup into the new tent.

I let another vendor use the blue tent since his was all busted up, so I didn't even need to take that one down until Sunday.

  • Contact the shipper and change the shipping delivery to a guaranteed early time. Example: Guaranteed by 8:00AM

A pop-up might be able to be setup after your artwork is inside. I would not attempt with a Trimline etc.

    • It's already on the road coming from Arizona. I changed the delivery to pickup, so I can pick it up from UPS as early as possible and don't have to worry about when the UPS truck manages to get to my house.

  • Up to the show. But you can't even submit an application to the better shows because they require a white canopy. Try Sam's Club or Costco for a $200 white pop up tent with four white sides.

A blue tent will turn your art blue as well as your neighbor's art.

    • I hadn't thought about the effect on my art. I do have black curtains that I hang behind my gridwalls so that might help. The ceiling might be an issue though.

I have a white tent that's on its way, but it won't be here in time for setup tomorrow. I wonder how much of a pain it would be to switch tents Friday right before the show. Noon to 2pm is still setup on Friday and I might have the tent by then.

      • See if they'll allow you to set up at 4:00 or 5:00AM.
