Display/jury

I'm looking for some advice and or ideas that's outside my normal realm I mainly do 2D work. After years of creating my work in a certain style, I have been drawn the last few yrs to create a different style. Lots of mixed media & the most recent is 3D work. I'm just gathering ideas for now (for next yr) because I've pretty much finished doing my apps for this year now (or I can't get everything pulled together by upcoming deadlines) I have poured over apps looking and most state that you can apply in different mediums & lots say if you are juried into 2 categories you will be granted 2 booth spaces. I'm not really interested in having two booth spaces. Is there ever a time where you can display 2D & sculpture/3D all in the same booth (I'm always by myself at shows so I never have the opportunity to explore other booths at shows)? Most people display sculpture/2D work on shelves or pedestals, so I can see how you could display 2D & 3D together if this is allowed. If such a thing is considered acceptable all in the same booth, how are booth shots done? Do you have one booth setup that has everything all together or one shot of 2D only and then one of 3D/sculpture only? Thanks, Mel

  • Thank you Larry, you're always so helpful.
That totally clears it up for me & gives me encouragement for trying the new things for next year.
  • Hi Mel, That wording about being granted two booth spaces is probably new since ZAPP recently started allowing multiple applications from the same profile. In the past, artists maintained multiple profiles, at least one for each medium they applied in.

I'd wager most artists who apply in multiple mediums just set up one booth with both bodies of work if accepted in both. After all, how many artists are willing to double their booth fee, especially since most of the better shows charge over $400 for a booth.

I do recommend having a different booth picture for each medium in the event the show may specify that as a requirement for submitting two applications, but plan on displaying both bodies in one booth if accepted in both categories.
