Brand New Canopy Damaged in Backyard!

It was just a minor ST last night and I wake up to see my Canopy all messed up. I set it up in my backyard on the deck, anchored it with proper weighted. It wasn't blown away, in fact it didn't even move a bit. But all the legs have been bent and the top frame dropped down to the ground. There are couple of cubic feet of water still laying in the top fabric, so I am guess it finally bend down because of the weight of the water?

So how could it staying fine overnight at a show and protect my valuables inside of it!

OK, it's a Kings Tuff tent. I know there are better ones on the market but this is what I can afford now. And I wonder all the artist using Kings or EZups, how do you prevent this from happening?

  • start with Ok and buy a better one each time and you will always end up with the best one for you.

  • When deciding what tent to buy, I asked myself the question 'How much of my art work would need to be damaged before the cheaper tent ended up being more expensive than the better tent' and I decided to suck it up and buy the better tent.

Given your experience, are you still going to buy another cheap tent?

    • Another way of looking at it is how many cheap canopies will you go through before you realize it would have been cheaper to buy a good canopy to start with, that is if you're doing shows long enough.

  • Thanks for the idea, Chris. I have some Velcro laying around. I will sew it to the top for extra support.
  • Our first KD top had ties where you fastened the top to the frame in the middle as well as the ends. It made the top taught so there was no pooling. But that was a few tops ago.

So we found some commercial grade Velcro straps that have a super sticky back and stuck it to the inside of the top. It loops around the frame and pulls the top taught, so no hula hoops are needed.

  • When using the pop up type tents, you need to support the roof so it doesn't gather water.

Here's an article on one of my web sites about using flexible PVC tubing to support the roof:

The better canopies are designed so water runs off and doesn't gather.

    • Thank you Larry! You are always here to help!

I guess this is the price I have to pay as a Newbie. I should be only be happy that I didn't leave any of my works underneath it! Thank you for the link about the roof support, I will definitely follow instructions!

Now I have to look for a new canopy and this one from Costco caught my eyes. What do you think about it?

      • Costco sells the Caravan which is also a pop up type canopy. Same solution.
