I received an email from the organizers asking me if I would be interested in the show again this year. The twist is that they are planning to do it as a curated event this year, whatever that means. I was asked to send a copy of a single work, which certainly adds a little pressure.

In the past, this has been a one day show on a Sunday with set up that morning. It's never been a large show, but it's an hour and a half drive for me, and the total cost has been on the level of a 1980's booth fee. Is anyone familiar with this sort of new format? I've not done the show for a few years so I don't know what's going on here.

  • Here's the blurb from their website home page:

Art Off Pike is Covington's annual arts festival. It is THE event for emerging artists to establish success with their careers. And, the perfect place for urban artists to engage with arts and cultural enthusiasts from the region! This year we are celebrating our 11th anniversary on September 27, 2015. Join us for incredible arts, culture, food, and booze! In addition to the amazing artists we will have, there are exciting new additions to Art Off Pike this year. Music and performances will take place in Madlot at 7th and Washington and will feature performance, music, dance, spoken word and more!  Follow us on Facebook for up to the minute updates!

I think your emerging fine art photography will look great among the murals and graffiti and whatnot, won't it? And you'll feel gratified if you tie a good one on with your favorite cocktail as you dance to the rhythm of the beat. Am I wrong?

What was the show like a few years ago?

    • It was a small one day 50-60 artist show put on by a local artists organization. It was a party atmosphere with food booths and entertainment. Most of the artists were regional or local, as well as relative newbies with seldom more than a few years of doing shows. Booth fee and app fee were exceptionally low so it kept expenses way down making it easy to turn a profit even with low sales. The art organization usually had an exhibit going on inside at the same time. It sounds as though the exhibit is being expanded and the fair itself may be changed into a cultural street party. I have not heard back from the organizers yet and they were emailed four days ago.
      • I have done Art off Pike for about 3-4 years.  Each year experienced declining traffic, sales, and vendors.  They needed a change, hopefully this format will help. I have decided to forgo this show.

        • I can't remember how far back it was when I last did the show but that may be about when I last did the show. The problem with a show that is oriented toward emerging artists is that quality can be spotty and too much low level work is going to drive people away. I did get another notice and it looks like the curated portion is going to be a new gallery show concurrent with the exterior street fair show.
