Hello all! I am a newbie to the art fair biz and was wondering what you all think of listing services and magazines that gather announcements for art fair artists.  I'm talking about places such as Sunshine Artist, Art Fair Network Online, etc.

Are they worth paying for?  If so, what listings and magazines do you recommend subscribing to?

Thanks in advance for any advice. This site has really helped me make some important decisions about starting out in the business.:)

  • I paid for Midwest Art Fairs online this year and am not impressed but their listings. I find more interesting local shows through word of mouth and my local Etsy group.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, all! I have plenty of sources to check out now and hope to book my first show as soon as the equipment comes in.:)
  • I subscribe to the Art Fair Source book (the online version) because it rates the top shows each year based on artist feedback. And I also get Art Calendar Magazine- I think the articles are good, and I love that they have no-fee listings. It seems sometimes that calls for artists are really just calls for application fees - so it's nice to see some non-fee opportunities.
  • I am one who does more local art/craft show publications such as the Art and Craft Show Yellow Pages. I am from the Mid-Atlantic region but there is a publication for nearly each region of the US. And I find it very worth it. I also use Festival Network Online too in addition to my states and local county's dept of tourism sites and printed calender of events. I rarely read at shows, but if a show is slow I will take a publication and check up on the news, get ideas on new selling techniques, or read up on success stories of others.

  • I have been a member of Festival net online for 3 years now. I have found it as a great resource for myself. I think I pay $39 a year. You can search for juried only, non-juried, indoor, outdoors and type in the distance from your zipcode for your search. They have the contact info and a website, phone numbers, jury fees and booth fees listed as well as deadlines. I have found many shows through this and if your lucky some artist are nice enough to rate these shows (not often) but I make sure after I do a show if it is listed there to rate the show and the promoter. you can do it for one year and get all the info to use for future years. You can do a free search but you will only get shows for like the next 60 days and with art shows there deadlines are long past.

If you are looking to do a lot of shows it would be worth the price to get all the info at one place and not spend as much time online chasing shows downs.

  • Yes! This is a good idea. I already subscribe to my state's tourism section on their website and check our local newspaper as well.

Many states also produce a guide. It is aimed toward tourists, but can be used by us as well. Those are free, too. I call each state's dept of tourism and ask them to mail me one.
