A Frustrating Year

I have been doing art shows for seven years in the southwest Florida area.  I am a metalsmith and I  make jewelry (what a mistake that was!)  Until last last year, I have primarily been doing small shows in the Naples area.  I belong to three local groups that put on seasonal monthly shows.  They are inexpensive shows.  Two of them have been pretty good.  The third is the most expensive and least profitable, so I do it only if I am not in a larger show. I generally have one two-day show each month.  During 2013, I started applying for larger shows and have been expanding my area.  I have been accepted in about half of the shows I have applied for, been waitlisted for most of the rest and rejected by only two of them.

This is my worst year since I started.  I have the best work I have ever done.  People walk into the booth. Admire the work. Try it on.  When they ask the price, they literally drop it.  My work is not outrageously expensive.  I work in primarily in sterling silver.  I accent some pieces with 14K or 18K gold.  I use semi-precious stones.  The better pieces are priced $200 to $450.  I also have lower priced items so I can sell to a broader audience.

Attendance at all my shows is poor this year.  People come through as if they are window shopping a a mall.  Is this happening in other parts of the country.  I know that we are over-saturated with art shows in southwest Florida.  Here in Naples, you can find an art show--or two or three--within a 30-mile radius every weekend from January thru March.  Every organization thinks it is a get way to raise money.  Every show promoter thinks we are a goldmine (and the artists are for them).

My question is, am I the only one having a lousy year????

  • Hi Charlotte, it was nice to chat with you at the Sanibel Lions show.  (Feel free to chime in on my review if you like.)  I am not a jewelry guy, but I thought your work was beautiful.

You don't name the local shows you are doing so it is hard to make any specific suggestion.  I am going to guess, however, that your schedule includes the ArtCrafters shows and the monthly Naples Art in the Park.  I did one Art in Park and didn't even cover the (low) booth fee; an established Naples photographer told me he is bailing on both those shows because he's not getting sufficient ROI.

Your "batting average" for getting into shows doesn't sound bad, to me.  But you are right, the Naples / SW Fla market is over-cooked and perhaps due for a shakeout.  If you are more comfortable at smaller shows compared with larger, you may wish to apply to several of Bill Kinney's Paragon shows next year.

    • Thank you for the compliment, Geoff.  I agree about Art in the Park.  That is the more expensive one that does not give a good ROI.  I only do it as a filler when I can't find something else.  A couple of the Bill Kinney shows are ones I was waitlisted for.  You do a lot of shows in this area.  What other ones would your recommend?

  • I can relate.  Since I am in Indiana, my year hasn't even started yet.  2012 was a horrible year for me.  Don't know why exactly.  2013 was my best year yet.  The reason was because I applied for and got in to two shows I hadn't done before, and they turned out to be my two best shows to date.

The economy seems to be slowly improving, but the middle class doesn't have any money.  However, if these people are that shocked at your prices, I don't think they are the right customer base for you.  If this is the norm at a particular show, they are not drawing the right crowd.

If anyone knows the secret to success in the the jewelry business, I'd love to hear it.

    • The Secret to Success is.........

      • ....Having something different than everybody else! You're the only one at the show.

      • Don't tease me Greg! lol
