Chris has a good point. The younger artists that I know doing the "circuit" would prefer to sell to galleries than do shows. The majority started out in the past few years actually doing shows so all they have known is a sluggish economy.
We have to take a long, hard look at the age of our customers. That will be a deciding factor in how we advertise.
For those of you who do Florida shows, are your customers the social media age, or middle age and over? The only people who attend the shows I do who are 'connected' are the kids trailing along after their parents.
However, this brings us to a completely different discussion.
The young who are just starting out are not interested in buying a canopy, walls, shelves, tables, checkouts, etc. They have no interest in the physical work required to make money, especially on a weekend!
I'm on a few forums where everybody believes all they have to do is set up an Etsy shop and they'll make lots of money. And are amazed when they get hits, but no sales. They blog thinking that will bring sales. Nope. They are on all the sites listed in the OP. And when I say you have to get your work out in front of the customer to touch, see close up and admire, they all say that's old fashioned. "Nobody does that anymore" is a common response.
So are we becoming a dinosaur? Is there going to be a point where younger exhibitors will not be there because they don't want to do what we do?
Not everyone reads facebook!! I still send out old fashioned post cards to my mailing list - with a coupon.
Yes! A nice graphic to reinforce all the steps... what about sending out notices to your email list also? or are you thinking FB can take the place of that?
Good point! Definitely - send out a notice via email. Just be careful to use an email newsletter provider - since you can be in the danger of getting banned from your email service by sending out too many email blasts.
