Jim Parker replied to Linnea Lahlum's discussion 'Birmingham MI Fine arts festival date change'
Go ahead. Apply. You know you want to. Birmingham is such a happening town. What else you got to do that weekend?

Jim Parker commented on Nels Johnson's blog post 'FIRST ROAD TRIP OF THE SEASON--ISLAMORADA,KEY WEST, MIAMI AND NEW SMYRNA BEACH HERE I COME'
Not everybody did poorly at Boca. I talked to some friends (jewelers) who had a good show, and reported that the glass artist next to them did well into five figures. Scott Martin's post was also pretty positive (elsewhere on this site.)

Jim Parker commented on Connie Mettler's group 'Photographers Darkroom'
Format for ZAPP, with black borders as necessary, 1920x1920 pixels, sRGB. Never show the mat or frame in your jury images, just the image itself. Use the price for the framed work that you will hang on the wall. If you have a 22x28 on the wall, and…

Jim Parker commented on Scott Martin's blog post 'Boca Raton Museum Jan 28-29'
Sorry to have missed it, but glad you had a great show. It's one of my favorite venues, but I've had to cancel or decline the past couple of years. Various things got in the way. Was there a list of the award winners posted? Usually they…

Jim Parker replied to Amy Ikenn's discussion 'Thinking about weights'
They were $75 each. I painted 'em myself, but you could probably get them powder coated if you wanted something real permanent. Steel bar stock is generally sold by weight.

have a great show, Mr. Scott.

Jim Parker replied to Marguerite Esrock's discussion 'Artist Awards- Are they important or just icing on the cake?'
You can always give out awards, perhaps with a token amount of money. But the high dollar awards often seems to be a waste of dollars that could be allocated towards the common good.

Jim Parker replied to Amy Ikenn's discussion 'Thinking about weights'
I had steel weights fabricated a few years ago. They are 2.5" square by 30" tall, with a loop welded to the top. Painted black, they can be hung behind the walls on black webbing. The walls can be zipped up around them, they don't…

Pay what you want...

Posted on September 21, 2011 at 8:00am 14 Comments

We were discussing the concept of "pay what you think it's worth" in another blog post recently. Briefly, customers name their own price, based on the value they believe they receive.

I'm a registered owner of Reason/Record (music sequencing and recording software), and normally upgrades cost around $100. The company sent this email to its customers today.

Today we are excited to announce a special offer for registered Record Reason Duo users.

Art & Apples, Rochester Michigan -- a plum of a show.

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 10:48am 16 Comments

Just returned from a super show in Rochester Hills, MI… the weather was so-so and the buying crowds were out in small numbers…The Paint Creek Center for the Arts staff and crew really did their jobs… all of the artists around us seemed to do fair to middling well with one glass artist doing much better than "well". The painter next to them said that she was told they did $15,000 on Saturday and $15,000 on Sunday. Of course the painter is French and has trouble with zeros, so it may have been…

Fine Art at the Village - Rochester Hills August 6-7

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 10:51am 5 Comments

Passably good weather, a pleasant venue, close to home. What more could an artist ask from a local show? Good sales would be a start. And FAATV, run by long-time artist and organizer Donna Beaubien, did not disappoint this past weekend. Hooray!

Glencoe Festival of the Masters -- great art, great artists, not so great turn-out

Posted on August 3, 2011 at 12:00pm 4 Comments

Ok here's the meat, along with a few pictures. First off, this is a small show in a small Chicago suburb that lies between Highland Park to the north and Winnetka to the south. Lots of money here, and a very cute little downtown area. The show is on Park Avenue, a block west of Green Bay Road, and on Vernon.

The 20th Annual Cain Park Art Festival

Posted on July 12, 2011 at 7:04am 8 Comments

Cain Park is a beautiful festival in a beautiful, tranquil park setting. We did Cain Park a few years back, and decided to give it another try. It is usually the same weekend as Madison and Krasl, and some of the other biggies, but is more…

Thanks, Jim! Will an orange martini make up for not being in the "orange" state?

Hey Jim, it was great meeting you at the Grove.  Even with the automatic in from the award, I will have to think about returning.  This wkd at a very small local show, I sold more than I did at the Grove.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for Gasparilla next wkd.

Many thanks, Jim, for this post about The Grove. I know you were traveling which hampers composition but you always have good ideas and skills.

What a coincidence! Same initials, almost the same name, from South Dakota... That's why all my friends call me Parker. Easier to remember ;-)

I may check it out when I'm down that way. Sounds interesting. Motorhome, traveling, southwest, sounds real familiar, except the motorhome. Can't get my wife to buy into that particular fantasy!
